More jobs for class of 2013 than class of 2012

By Ben Popken, TODAY contributor

Job prospects for new college grads have been looking pretty bleak, but that trend could be reversing starting this spring.

Employers said they plan on hiring 13 percent more from the class of 2013 than the class of 2012, according to the just-released National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Job Outlook 2013 survey.?

That's good news, considering overall seasonally adjusted unemployment ratesare 8.1 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. When you add in into those who have given up looking for work for various reasons, what the BLS calls its ?U-6? measure, that number is even higher, 14.7 percent.?

In another positive sign for new grads, the number of employers saying they had ?firm? plans in place to recruit in the spring is up to 37.6 percent from 34.4 percent last year. Overall recruiting plans are up?slightly as well, from 18.2 percent to 18.6 percent.?

The number of respondents saying they will hire fewer college graduates than last year went down to 8 percent.?That's the lowest percentage in the survey since 2007.?

Brandon Labam, co-founder of Virginia-based ROCS staffing, which specializes in recruiting college and graduate talent, said he's likewise been seeing the number of job listings increase. Additionally, companies are now not just recruiting for revenue-generating positions like sales, but also infrastructure-building administrative roles. That's a sign companies are more willing to invest in long-term growth.?

The appeal of hiring a fresh college graduate is that while they take more training, there's ?a lot more upside if you train them well,? said Labam. ?They don't have bad habits from another job ... you can mold them into the perfect employee.??

But haven't we been hearing how millennial employees are lazy, difficult to manage, need to be coddled, and just play on Twitter all day? Why would employers want more of them??

Labam says he's seeing that sense of ?entitlement? among entry-level candidates from the years past has gone away. No one thinks they're going to get their dream job perfectly tailored to their individual personality handed to them anymore. Graduates now realize they need to demonstrate ?hunger? and ?passion? in the interview room if they're going to get the job. ?It's come back to basics,? he said. ?You can't just be good and from a good school. You've got to work your butt off.??

Besides seeing the attitude shift in the candidates, hiring a new college graduate is an inexpensive way for companies to test the hiring waters. They'll take a lower salary, and be easier to get rid of if the upswing falters.

Anti-cuts protests erupt on streets of Athens and Madrid

ATHENS/MADRID (Reuters) - Demonstrators clashed with police on the streets of Athens and Madrid on Wednesday in an upsurge of popular anger at new austerity measures being imposed on two of the euro zone's most vulnerable economies.

In some of the most violent confrontations, Greek police fired tear gas at hooded rioters hurling petrol bombs as thousands joined the country's biggest protest in more than a year.

The unrest erupted after nearly 70,000 people marched to the Greek parliament chanting "EU, IMF Out!" on the day of a general strike against further cuts demanded by foreign lenders.

"We can't take it anymore - we are bleeding. We can't raise our children like this," said Dina Kokou, a 54-year-old teacher and mother of four who lives on 1,000 euros ($1,250) a month.

In Madrid, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy faced violence on the streets of the capital and growing talk of secession in Catalonia as he moves cautiously closer to asking Europe for a bailout, aware that such an action has cost other European leaders their jobs.

In public, Rajoy has been resisting calls to move quickly to request assistance, but behind the scenes he is putting together the pieces to meet the stringent conditions that will accompany rescue funds.

Rajoy presents a tough 2013 budget on Thursday, aiming to send a message that Spain is doing its deficit-cutting homework despite a recession and 25 percent unemployment.

Spain appears on course to miss its public deficit target of 6.3 percent of gross domestic product this year, and the central bank said the economy continued to contract sharply in the third quarter.

Rajoy is facing intense pressure from euro zone policymakers to take tougher measures, particularly on freezing pensions.

On Friday, Moody's will publish its latest review of Spain's credit rating, possibly downgrading the country's debt to junk status.

On the same day, an independent audit of Spain's banks will reveal how much money Madrid will need from a 100 billion euro ($130 billion) aid package that Europe has already approved for the banks.

HEADING FOR A BAILOUT

Rajoy is gradually shedding his reluctance to seek a sovereign bailout for the euro zone's fourth biggest economy - a condition for European Central Bank intervention to cut his country's borrowing costs.

He suggested on Wednesday that he would make the move if debt financing costs remained too high for too long.

"I can assure you 100 percent that I would ask for this bailout," he told the Wall Street Journal.

He also said he had not made his mind up on whether to allow pensions to rise in step with inflation, which could cost the government an extra 6 billion euros this year.

"We need to be sufficiently flexible in order not to create any further problems," he said when asked about pensions.

His remarks, coupled with the central bank's warning on the economy helped drive up Spain's borrowing costs, with the yield on the benchmark 10-year bond jumping to 6 percent, a level seen as unsustainable in the medium term. The index of leading stocks fell 3.46 percent to a two-week low.

The Spanish government's drive to rein in regional overspending as part of its austerity measures has prompted a flare-up of independence fervor in Catalonia, the wealthy northeastern region that generates one-fifth of Spain's economic output.

Catalonia needs a 5 billion-euro bailout from Madrid to meet debt payments this year, but Catalans believe they bear an unfairly large share of the country's tax burden.

Artur Mas, the conservative president of Catalonia, announced on Tuesday he would hold early elections in November after Rajoy rebuffed his call for more tax autonomy.

On Wednesday Mas took things further, saying Catalonia should also hold a referendum on independence, which the central government says would be unconstitutional.

SAMARAS FACES TEST

With Rajoy under new pressure from the Catalans, his fellow euro zone struggler, Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, also faced a major test, in the shape of a 24-hour strike called by the country's two biggest unions.

Ships stayed in port, museums and monuments were shut and air traffic controllers walked off the job. Trains and flights were suspended, public offices and shops were shut, and hospitals provided a reduced service.

Union anger is directed at spending cuts worth nearly 12 billion euros ($16 billion) over the next two years that Greece has promised the European Union and International Monetary Fund in an effort to secure its next tranche of aid.

The bulk of those cuts is expected to come from cutting wages, pensions and welfare benefits, heaping a new wave of misery on Greeks who say repeated rounds of austerity have pushed them to the brink and failed to transform the country for the better.

"My husband has lost his job, we just can't make ends meet," said Dimitra Kontouli, 49, a local government employee whose salary has been cut to 1,100 euros a month from 1,600 euros.

Unions argue that Greece should remain in the euro but default on part of its debt and ditch the current recipe of austerity cuts in favor of higher taxes on the rich and efforts to nab wealthy tax evaders.

But with Greece facing certain bankruptcy and a potential euro zone exit without further aid, Samaras's government has little choice but to push through the measures.

Report: Premium hikes for top Medicare drug plans

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Seniors enrolled in seven of the 10 most popular Medicare prescription drug plans will be hit with double-digit premium hikes next year if they don't shop for a better deal, says a private firm that analyzes the highly competitive market.

The report Monday by Avalere Health is a reality check on the Obama's administration's upbeat pronouncements. Back in August, officials had announced that the average premium for basic prescription drug coverage will stay the same in 2013, at $30 a month.

The administration's number is accurate as an overall indicator for the entire market, but not very helpful to consumers individually since it doesn't reflect price swings in the real world.

"The average senior is going to benefit by carefully scrutinizing their situation, because every year the market changes," Avalere President Dan Mendelson said. Avalere crunched the numbers based on bid documents that the plans submitted to Medicare.

The report found premium increases for all top 10 prescription drug plans, known as PDPs. However, the most popular plan ? AARP MedicareRx Preferred ? is only going up 57 cents per month nationally, to $40.42 from the current $39.85.

The seven plans with double-digit premium increases were: the Humana Walmart-Preferred Rx Plan (23 percent); First Health Part D Premier (18 percent); First Health Part D Value Plus (17 percent); Cigna Medicare Rx Plan One (15 percent); Express Scripts Medicare-Value (13 percent); the HealthSpring Prescription Drug Plan (12 percent); and Humana Enhanced (11 percent).

Another two plans in the top 10 also had single-digit increases. They were the SilverScript Basic (8 percent) and WellCare Classic (3 percent).

On the plus side for consumers, a new low-cost plan entered the market. Premiums for the AARP MedicareRx Saver Plus Plan will average $15 a month nationally, although it won't be available everywhere. That's $3.50 less than the current low-cost leader, the Humana Walmart plan, whose premiums are rising to $18.50.

The new AARP plan is run by UnitedHealth Group Inc., the nation's largest health insurance company. United pays AARP for the right to use its name on a range of Medicare insurance products, a successful business strategy that has proven lucrative for both partners. When Humana and Walmart teamed up to offer their low-cost plan in 2011, United felt the competition.

"There is a real focus on the premium in this market," Mendelson said. "If a plan fields an offering with a low premium, it knows it can capture a significant number of customers."

Medicare spokesman Brian Cook did not dispute the Avalere estimates. "We continue to encourage seniors to shop around and find the plan that works best for them," he said.

Medicare's open enrollment season starts Oct. 15, and beneficiaries have a wide variety of choices of taxpayer-subsidized private prescription plans. Seniors and family members can use the online Medicare Plan Finder to input individual prescription lists and find plans in their area that cover them.

About 90 percent of Medicare's nearly 50 million beneficiaries have some form of drug coverage, with more than 17 million enrolled in private plans through the prescription drug program.

President Barack Obama's 2010 health care law is improving prescription drug plans by gradually closing the coverage gap known as the doughnut hole for those with high prescription drug costs.

The Avalare numbers did have one silver lining for the Obama administration. When the projections are tweaked to account for seniors switching to lower-cost coverage, premiums for 2013 are likely to remain steady.

Separately, the administration recently announced that average premiums for Medicare Advantage insurance plans will barely inch up next year on average, while enrollment in the private medical plans will continue to rise. Many Medicare Advantage plans also combine prescription drug coverage in one package deal.

But the biggest premium announcement is yet to come. Virtually all seniors pay the Part B premium for outpatient care, including those with traditional Medicare as well as those in private plans. Currently $99.90 a month, the Part B premium it is expected to rise next year by less than $10.

A Handy List Of Home Improvement Ideas | Buy Property In Singapore

No matter what you?re attempting to do in life, knowing how to do it is a great point from which to start. Understanding the task at hand is extremely important to ensure your home improvement project goes smoothly. You don?t want to be stuck with a leaking roof or broken basement stair. The following tips will give you the knowledge you need to get started in home improvement.

Landscaping is a home improvement project you should consider. People look at the front of your home when they first see it, and this can leave a lasting impression. Keep your grass neat and tidy, and add a border of flowering plants and shrubs to add additional beauty and dimension to your yard.

TIP! One of the most fun projects that you can do for your home can actually involve your whole family, including children. A garden in your front yard goes a long way towards increasing the value of your house.

A great way to conserve energy while also keeping bugs out of your home, is to seal up any cracks in your home. Simply apply caulk to baseboards, around and inside windows, and any other places. Caulking these areas helps to keep cool air and heat from getting out.

Think small with your next home project and start with just one room. Rather than trying to do the entire house at one time, you can go room by room to save time and money. Before beginning any home improvement project, write out a detailed plan so you can keep a watch out for sales on the items you need. A good way to save money while improving your house is to plan ahead.

Unless a homeowner is just fixing a drain, it is critical that he make a list of all the materials that will be required to complete a proposed home improvement project. Many things can be bought in bulk which will save money. Many materials and equipment required in renovations also have long lead times. If they are not ordered in advance they can hold up the entire project.

TIP! A floor lamp can be a great addition to the room and free up valuable space on a nightstand or dresser. Floor versions are great because they can be easily moved to different locations.

Don?t be afraid to complain if your home improvements are not what you expected from your contractor. Begin with your contractor and let him know the portions of the contract you believe he has violated. If a talk does not seem to bring about a resolution then it may be time to put your concerns in a letter and send it to him through a registered letter. After that, you should call the consumer protection office in your area and see if they can help.

Purchase high-quality supplies and tools for an home improvement projects you are doing yourself. Purchasing high quality tools can be costly, but it is a very worthwhile investment. Better quality products survive wear and tear and last longer. Therefore, you should purchase quality tools that will last for a long time.

TIP! If you would like to save money by staying in your home while making improvements, work on one room at once. This will make it easier to live in your home, until it?s the bathroom! Think about staying with friends then.

When planning any home improvement project, it is important to consider how any unwanted debris will be disposed of. If you are doing any demolition, you will have rubbish that you need to get rid of. Before you actually start, you should make a place for it to go.

When you renovate a bathroom, it pays to make the bathroom handicap-accessible as part of the renovation project. This conversion can be done in stages if cost is a concern, and will save a lot of headache if you live in your current home until you die. When the time comes to put your home on the market, these renovations can add value to your home.

One of the most expensive things a homeowner can do is to replace the roof. Get a few estimates prior to getting a new roof and check all references for the companies you look at. Lots of choices in roofing materials exist today, such as metal roofing, lightweight tiles, composite shingles and conventional wood shakes. A contractor can help you make the right decision.

TIP! Adding big value to your home can be accomplished with even the smallest of improvements. If you?re looking to sell your house, then consider doing one or two small things.

The good thing about home projects is that they are relatively easy to do. Having the right information is, of course, an important part of a successful improvement. With the advice in the article above, you should be better prepared to meet your goal. Take the information learned and put it to use on your next renovation

(AP) ? The NFL conceded Tuesday that a bad call cost the Green Bay Packers the game ? yet still upheld the Seattle Seahawks' victory.

While coaches, players and fans ? even athletes in other sports ? ripped the use of replacement refs, the league met with its locked-out officials Tuesday in an attempt to resolve the impasse.

Two people with knowledge of the talks told The Associated Press that the sides were meeting Tuesday. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions were not made public.

The NFL said Seattle's last-second touchdown pass of the "Monday Night Football" game should not have been overturned in the 14-12 victory ? but acknowledged Seahawks receiver Golden Tate should have been called for offensive pass interference before the catch.

Frustrations over the replacements have mounted through the first three weeks of the season and reached an apex Monday when a highly questionable call decided the outcome of a game.

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, normally a soft-spoken player who didn't say much after the game, lashed out on his radio show a day later.

"First of all, I've got to do something that the NFL is not going to do: I have to apologize to the fans," he said.

Even President Barack Obama got in on the conversation Tuesday, tweeting: "NFL fans on both sides of the aisle hope the refs' lockout is settled soon."

The controversy began on the final play when Russell Wilson heaved a 24-yard pass into a scrum in the end zone with Seattle trailing 12-7. Tate shoved away a defender with both hands, and the NFL acknowledged Tuesday he should have been penalized, which would have clinched a Packers victory. But it was not called and cannot be reviewed by instant replay.

Tate and Green Bay safety M.D. Jennings then both got their hands on the ball, though the Packers insisted Jennings had clear possession for a game-ending interception.

"It was pinned to my chest the whole time," Jennings said.

Instead, the officials ruled on the field that the two had simultaneous possession, which counts as a reception. Once that happened, the NFL said, the referee was correct that no indisputable visual evidence existed on review to overturn the touchdown call.

"The NFL Officiating Department reviewed the video today and supports the decision not to overturn the on-field ruling following the instant replay review," the league said in a statement.

Saying there was no indisputable evidence, though, is not the same as confirming the initial call was correct. Simultaneous possession can be reviewed only on plays in the end zone.

On his weekly appearance on Seattle radio station 710 KIRO-AM, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll made no apologies Tuesday, saying, "The league backed it up and game over. We win."

"Golden makes an extraordinary effort. It's a great protection. It's a great throw. It's a great attempt at the ball and he wins the battle," he said. "They were right on the point looking right at it, standing right over the thing and they reviewed it. Whether they missed the push or not ? obviously they missed the push in the battle for the ball ? but that stuff goes on all the time."

But Rodgers, in a reference to referee Wayne Elliott not seeing indisputable evidence, said: "I mean, come on, Wayne. That's embarrassing."

The NFL locked out the officials in June after their contract expired. Unable to reach a new collective bargaining agreement, the league opened the season with replacements, most with experience only in lower levels of college football.

Coaches and players began griping about the replacements in the preseason, but the frustration seemed to boil over in Week 3 this past weekend.

Scuffles after the whistle were frequent with players appearing to test the limits of the new officials and coaches were fined for berating them.

Las Vegas oddsmakers said $300 million or more changed hands worldwide on Monday's call. The Glantz-Culver line for the game opened favoring the Packers by 4?. Had the play been ruled an interception, Green Bay would have won by 5.

The call also found its way into Wisconsin politics, with Republican Gov. Scott Walker tweeting for the regular officials to return. Opponents noted that he seemed to be supporting the referees union after going after public employee unions last year, though Democratic state Sen. Jon Erpenbach added: "We're all fans, first and foremost."

LEAF Announces Securitization of $221 Million of Leasing Assets

LEAF Commercial Capital, Inc. (?LEAF?), a leading independent commercial equipment leasing and finance company, announced today the closing of a new securitization transaction, LEAF 2012-1, which was completed on September 21, 2012.

Through LEAF 2012-1, LEAF securitized a portfolio of approximately $221 million of leases and commercial loans through the issuance of equipment contract-backed notes. The transaction is the second securitization of small ticket equipment leases and commercial loans that LEAF has sponsored since its inception. The leases and loans were originated by LEAF and are backed by various equipment including office equipment such as photocopiers, printers and telecommunications systems, as well as technology, light industrial and healthcare-related equipment.

Guggenheim Securities, LLC, was the arranger of the notes and Natixis Securities Americas, LLC and Credit Suisse Securities (USA), LLC were co-arrangers. LEAF will continue to be the servicer of the assets. LEAF issued nine fixed rate classes of notes that were rated by Moody?s and DBRS, with the Class A notes having the benefit of a financial guaranty insurance policy issued by Assured Guaranty Corp. This was a private offering made to qualified institutional buyers pursuant to Rule 144A under the Securities Act of 1933, as amended, by LEAF Receivables Funding 8, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of LEAF Commercial Capital, Inc.

Miles Herman, President and COO of LEAF, stated, ?This is our second successful securitization completed in less than two years since launching LEAF Commercial Capital, Inc. We are pleased with our success in securing customer finance programs with top quality equipment vendors as our primary source of originations and also the support we have received from the capital markets that fuels our growth. We believe that the confidence that both investors and the rating agencies have shown in us further validates our business approach. A vital part of a well-rounded funding strategy for an independent finance company is accessing an active term securitization market. This transaction demonstrates and reinforces the fact that, despite difficult economic times, we can effectively participate in this market. We will be using the proceeds of this financing to pay down an existing warehouse facility and thus increase our capacity to meet the future financing needs of our valued equipment vendor partners. As a regular programmatic issuer, we look forward to continued future access to the securitization market.?

Replacing ObamaCare: Insurance Across State Lines (Part 2 ...

Let?s take a closer look at how interstate insurance sales would impact another important element of consumer-driven health care reform: true insurance. If you?ve forgotten, true insurance is individual insurance. Most people receive their health insurance as the result of a group insurance plan provided by their employer. Some of the benefits of true, individual insurance include portability, better coverage of pre-existing conditions, and greater choice and freedom for consumers.?

However, excessive state regulatory mandates can make true insurance outright unaffordable. Consider this excerpt from a 2008 report?by the Council for Affordable Health Insurance:

?Access to affordable coverage can vary significantly from state to state, depending on state regulation. For example, community rating and guaranteed issue have made policies in the individual market unaffordable except for the wealthiest residents of Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York. If residents living in states with unaffordable health insurance could purchase policies currently being sold in other states, they too would have access to affordable coverage.? (Emphasis added)

There are significant disparities between the states in the number and extent of their regulatory mandates. While Virginia and Rhode Island residents are required?to purchase insurance plans burdened with a stunning 70 state mandates, Idaho insurers are only restricted by 13. As health care policy expert Avik Roy explains, ?Insurance mandates can raise the costs?of premiums by 30-50 percent. If I could buy insurance from another state, where regulations are less onerous, I might not be forced to buy a policy that covers drug-abuse counseling.? (Emphasis added)

Also, let me be clear on one thing: We want to lift the barriers to the interstate sale of health insurance, but we do not want the federal government to begin laying down regulatory mandates (such as guaranteed issue or community rating) on insurance. We believe that the regulation of insurance remains the duty of state legislatures and regulators, not the federal government. Whereas the federal government has the power to remove barriers to commerce among the states, we do not believe that it has the power to regulate insurance sales in each individual state.?

Increasing market competition by allowing Americans to purchase health insurance across state lines will lead to lower costs, greater choice, and better quality of care. Representative Paul Broun?s (R-GA) Patient OPTION Act?is just one of several conservative bills that will allow Americans to purchase health insurance across state lines. It?s an essential piece of the conservative plan to repeal and replace ObamaCare with affordable, consumer-driven, patient-centered health care.?

Follow These Expert Tips To Get More From Your Internet Marketing

If you are trying to open a new business or expand on a current one, the powerful marketing tools available online may be for you. While there might have a lot of useful information about internet marketing online, sifting through all of it to find what works best might be a bit confusing. Here, you will find tips to get you started on the right path.

Transaction security is important if you are selling in volume. You can choose from many services that are trustworthy and honest. Some of them include VeriSign or McAffee; these will be recognizable to your customer and they will feel safe. Security systems can cost money, but they are absolute necessities for doing business online safely.

When promoting a small business via internet marketing, pay attention to detail and the content you are providing your customers. Do your best to write original and relevant content. Teach your visitors something about you or your business, and keep the content regularly updated to ensure repeat visitors.

While marketing consultants can be costly, the internet is filled with marketing resources that are available at no charge. There are many forums dedicated to topics of interest to small business owners. Furthermore, there is plenty of free and for-pay literature available to help you along the way. Seminars are also a popular option for career development.

Including a FAQ can be a helpful way to advertise the products you sell or the services you offer. Take the time to develop questions that allow for answers full of product suggestions. Write the questions so that your products are the answers without making it look like obvious product placement.

Most people will respect someone with an important title. Let people know you are the top dog. You may even want to call yourself the business?s President or CEO.

An excellent web-traffic generating tactic is to publish online press releases. With a well-written press release, that offers clear and informative content, you can find multiple sources that will publish it and open it to niche markets. It?s a simple and quick way to jumpstart your online presence.

Create a bond of loyalty with you customers and they will continue to support your business. Encourage the reader to imagine how his or her life would be easier or better as a direct result of using your product. You want your customer to feel like they are getting the full benefit of your product, simply by reading your advertisement.

When you link to another page on your site, use your keywords in the anchor text. Your page index relies on individuals spending time reading your content. If you link to relevant content, you will save your customers hassle and encourage them to read further. In this sense, internal linking is an excellent way to hook your readers and boosts your search engine statistics.

Feature comments from your customers about your products on your site. People love to look at the reviews from others about your products. By feeling comfortable with your business, they will likely spend more money.

Business Information

If you are good at writing, write some articles containing your business information to submit to websites and magazines that accept submissions of articles. Ensure you have the business information for your company in the articles. You can entice the editors with commissions or freebies that encourage them to publish your content.

Try offering different versions of your site to people all over the world. Offer visitors the option of choosing their own language when viewing your site. You will get many more customers from different parts of the globe, and you are likely to see an impressive boost in traffic. If customers can properly understand your site because the content is in their own language, it increases the chance that they will purchase items from you.

It can sound good on paper to have ten different social media profiles, but if you can?t give them each plenty of time to seem active, it won?t do any good. People don?t bother with inactive profiles.

Internet marketing campaigns should encourage growth of this strategy. Using the Internet is like a cycle, in which users see your business, purchase from you, and then spread the word about your products.

Remember to utilize email to get the most from your business. You should design your newsletters to draw in and excite your customers. The emails should be filled with interesting content; you do not want the recipients to perceive them as spam. Sending something to your customers on a regular basis ensures that you are kept in their minds, just be sure to not over-do it.

Internet Marketing

As you probably know, one of the best ways to improve the success of your business is through the effective use of internet marketing. Follow the tips in this article, and your sales will improve because your internet marketing efforts will be successful

Not just for Halloween, pumpkin is the new bacon!

Pumpkin lattes. Pumpkin candles. Pumpkin beer, dog food, facial masks, cologne.

Move over bacon, there's a new must-have ingredient.

With fall starting this weekend, the pumpkin harvest is upon us. The crop is looking pretty good, despite the drought. In fact, the USDA says average retail prices are less than half what they were a year ago.

"It seems like folks are holding off a little bit longer this year and waiting closer to Halloween," says Sarah Frey-Talley, president and CEO of Frey Produce. She is one of the largest pumpkin providers in the country to?Libby's,?Walmart?and?Target. Though prices are down, she expects to make it up with greater volumes.

Three years ago Libby's, owned by?Nestle, went into Thanksgiving with a pumpkin shortage due to heavy rains. This year, Nestle Baking director Jim Coyne says there is plenty of fruit (yes, pumpkin is a fruit) but many Jack-o-Lanterns are slightly smaller due to the drought. "On the positive side, those pumpkins are very dense and just perfect for canning." (See:?Fans are going bananas for soft-serve fruit.)

Restaurant demand for pumpkin in menu items has soared 38 percent in two years, according to Technomic, with items like pumpkin seed crepes at?Adobo Grill?and the Pumpkin Martini at?Burton's Grill.

"Pumpkin has a healthful perception," says Technomic Executive VP Darren Tristano. He says the ingredient has gotten so popular it's finally gone mainstream. "It's getting to?McDonald's?in milkshakes, and as a result, it is likely getting to a point of final maturity. We'll look towards sustainability over time."

Yet the industry continues to find new markets.

Sarah Frey-Talley says she is now being approached to provide pumpkins for oil. What is pumpkin oil used for? "I'm probably not going to comment on that," she laughs. "One of the most recent articles I read was that pumpkin oil was being used for prostate health, so I'll leave it at that."

No one's been pumpin' pumpkin products harder than?Starbucks, which introduced its seasonal Pumpkin Spice Lattes about a decade ago.

"The category has created a huge following," says Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz. "We are seeing incremental sales growth on the pumpkin spice latte, which is very encouraging." (See:?Starbucks CEO draws comparison to Steve Jobs.)

Is it really the new bacon? Does there have to be an either-or? Seattle's Best, a division of Starbucks, has come up with a product where everybody wins. Last month it announced the winner of a best new coffee contest: pumpkin bacon coffee, created by Eileen Gannon, who named it "How to Win a Guy With One Sip." (See:?Bacon as currency: Testing the limits of what it can buy.)

Google?s ?victims? thriving, despite telling regulators otherwise

Several of Google?s competitors are playing the victim card to regulators while reporting successes to their investors.

Major travel companies ? including Expedia, TripAdvisor and Kayak ? have said that Google?s dominance in search adversely affects their business models.

They, along with several other travel companies, Microsoft and Yelp, are petitioning federal and state regulators to rein in Google.

Expedia, for example, says that it is worried about Google?s power as a search engine. The company complained to regulators that it was largely dependent upon search engines for traffic in 2011, but in October 2010, CEO Dara Khrosrowshahi told investors that search traffic is ?much less profitable traffic? than direct traffic.

Yelp co-founder and CEO Jeremy Stoppelman said the company had a Google problem in a Senate antitrust hearing last year, but during an earnings call in August, he said that the company experienced 70 percent year-over-year growth in its mobile traffic.

?On average, our mobile app was used on 7.2 million mobile devices per month in the second quarter, up 70 percent year-over-year,? he said.

?Approximately 40 percent of Yelp searches are now conducted on our mobile apps, becoming the majority on weekends,? he said.

TripAdvisor has also logged complaints with the E.U. Commission and the U.S. government against Google, chargin unfair and ?anticompetitive practices.?

But according to recent statements by TripAdvisor CEO Stephen Kaufer, Google is far from a threat to the company.

In a July earnings call, not only did Kaufer think that Google?s Google Places app was not taking traffic away from TripAdvisor, but that it would be even better for the company to shift more resources towards Facebook since it was working out well. He also said that TripAdvisor was the second most popular Facebook app.

Following an interview with TechCrunch in December 2011 when Kaufer voiced concerns over Google?s attempts to move into travel planning, Barclay?s Capital Equity Research said that competition from Google Places may be ?overstated? and that the TripAdvisor is ?entrenched in the fabric of travel planning.?

As recently as August, Internet analytics company comScore said that TripAdvisor is the most popular travel website.

Kayak?s lobbying group, FairSearch, which also lobbies for several of its other fellow travel sites, professed a worry about its companies not being placed near the top of Google search results.

Seventy-five percent of Kayak?s traffic, however, comes through direct navigation. Only 10 percent of Kayak?s traffic in the first six months of 2012 came from search engines. These numbers are relatively unchanged from November 2010 ? prior to Google?s entry into the travel market in the U.S., according to Kayak?s security Exchange Commission filings.

Yelp deferred The Daily Caller to its blog for official company comment on the matter. The blog included a September 2011 post from Stoppelman and his official testimony delivered to the Senate.

Expedia, TripAdvisor and Kayak all did not respond to The Daily Caller?s request for comment.

FairSearch declined to comment.

Danbury football team wins a wild one over Hamden

DANBURY -- Wow, were the Football Gods ever smiling down upon the Danbury Hatters on Friday night.

After watching a 13-point, fourth-quarter lead evaporate in a matter of seconds against Hamden, Danbury regained the lead for good when the Dragons botched a punt from their own end zone. The resulting safety lifted the Hatters to an improbable 15-14 victory, their first of the season.

"I have to credit our kids for playing all the way through," Danbury coach Dan Donovan said. "Our defense could've hung their heads there when that happened and just let them run the clock out. But they decided they were going to step in and stop them. We knew we had some time and our timeouts. We were going to go after the punt, and it came out in our favor."

Led by sophomore quarterback Anferny Ith and a valiant defensive effort, the Hatters appeared to be in the driver's seat early in the fourth quarter. They led 13-0 courtesy of Corey Chaffee's electrifying 86-yard punt return for a touchdown in the second quarter and Ith's 17-yard touchdown pass to Tristan Jakobson in the third.

But Hamden refused to go peacefully.

A 22-yard touchdown pass from Eli Bonadies to Spencer Thomas trimmed the Dragons' deficit to 13-6 with 7:31 remaining.

Danbury's Chris Latham misplayed the ensuing kickoff and Hamden's Trevor Perry pounced on the loose ball at the Danbury 5. One play later, Bonaparte ran for the score and Bonadies ran for the two-point conversion to make it 14-13 Hamden.

"It's a learning experience for Chris," Donovan said. "I talked to him and he thought it was going to roll into the end zone. If it rolls into the end zone, it's a touchback, no problem. But it didn't quite make it, then he went for it. A little bit of nervousness, but he learned from it. It'll never happen again."

Danbury's ensuing drive stalled at the Hamden 11 with less than four minutes to go. But just when all hope seemed lost for the Hatters, their defense stopped Hamden on three successive plays and forced the Dragons to line up for the pivotal punt. The snap slipped through punter Akeemo Dixon's hands and rolled around in the end zone. Dixon recovered the ball to prevent Danbury from scoring a touchdown, but the safety was enough to put the Hatters back in front.

Danbury recovered the ensuing onside kick, but couldn't run the clock completely out on its next drive. Hamden took over with time enough for one last play, but Danbury's Marlon Black sacked Bonadies as time expired.

"Danbury played hard today," Hamden coach Tony Martone said. "I like their quarterback. He kept them in the game. Special teams -- we dropped the ball in the end zone, they return a punt for a touchdown -- that was the difference in the game tonight."

Ith, who played freshman football last year, seemed to grow up right in front of the 2,000 or so fans in attendance. He took charge in the second half.

"We know he's an athlete, and he's got a great head," Donovan said. "But coming off of freshman football and going with a new offense on the varsity level, it took him a game and a half to settle in."

Ith completed 16 of 25 passes -- 10 of 16 in the second half -- for 115 yards and ran the ball 11 times for 39 yards. He was sacked twice and intercepted twice, all in the first half. He hit Chaffee four times for 34 yards and Jakobson three times for 23.

"We just played hard as a team," Ith said. "We never gave up on each other. I threw my two picks in the first half, but everyone picked it up and did what they had to do. Everyone just did their job."

Alfred Valentine set the tone for the Danbury defense on Hamden's opening series of the game. The Dragons were moving the ball efficiently until, on third and 20 from the Hamden 41, Valentine's punishing hit on receiver Derrick Atkinson broke up a pass across the middle. U.S. shares end flat as Spain factor fades; oil up

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks and the euro ended a week of slight moves with limited action on Friday, as a late-day sell-off on Wall Street indicated continued concerns about the economy's growth prospects and Europe's debt crisis.

Equities rose for much of the session on expectations that Spain was taking steps to seek a bailout, helping for a time to quell worries about Europe's lingering debt crisis. The benchmark S&P 500 and the Dow, however, ended the day marginally lower, while the Nasdaq eked out a small gain.

Oil prices rose on supply worries over tensions in the Middle East and delays in North Sea shipments. Brent crude climbed 1.3 percent above $111 a barrel, but still finished posted a drop of 4.5 percent on the week.

The euro rose less than 0.1 percent against the dollar. Volume was thin ahead of the weekend and the expiration of options contracts contributed to the late-day volatility.

Traders said the euro may struggle to extend gains amid uncertainty over the timing of a potential bailout in Spain.

"The Spain news was relatively small," said Joseph Greco, managing director of Meridian Equity Partners in New York, though he said "the euro-dollar currency play resulting from that news was definitely something that we spoke about. But it has been a lot of back and forth. I don't anticipate there will be much more room there."

Sources with knowledge of the matter said Spain was considering speeding up a planned rise in the retirement age as it races to cut spending and meet conditions of an expected international sovereign aid package. The sources also said Spain may freeze pensions, something that the country's deputy prime minister later denied.

Germany's finance minister, Wolfgang Schaeuble, dented expectations, however, by saying that Spain did not need a sovereign bailout on top of the package already agreed for its banks because it was on the right path to regain the confidence of markets.

Apple Inc, the most valuable U.S. company, rose 0.2 percent as it debuted the latest version of its iPhone worldwide. The stock hit a record high of $705.07 before pulling back to close at $700.09.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 17.46 points, or 0.13 percent, at 13,579.47. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 0.11 points, or 0.01 percent, at 1,460.15. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 4.00 points, or 0.13 percent, at 3,179.96.

For the week, the Dow unofficially fell 0.1 percent, the S&P lost 0.4 percent, and the Nasdaq fell 0.1 percent. The S&P remains up 16 percent on the year, gains that have come on concerted central bank economic stimulus measures, though investors are now looking for reasons to keep pushing equities higher.

European shares closed up 0.4 percent after having briefly tested 14-month highs earlier. Banks led gains, driven by Spanish banks BBVA and Banco Santander on the expectations for progress in solving Spain's debt problem.

The MSCI global index climbed 0.3 percent.

The euro, which has lost around 1.5 percent since hitting a 4-1/2-month high a week ago, was up 0.1 percent at $1.2983, having briefly climbed back above the psychologically important $1.30 mark.

The dollar fell less than 0.1 percent against a basket of currencies to 79.352, bringing it closer to the 6-1/2-month low of 78.601 hit last week in the wake of aggressive monetary easing by the U.S. Federal Reserve.

With all eyes on whether Spain will call for aid, support for the euro was seen at Thursday's low, which stood just above its 233-day moving average at $1.2915.

Markets brushed off a well-flagged report from the UK showing that plans to reduce its deficit have fallen behind target as the European debt crisis has hit global growth.

The news followed Italy's warning late on Wednesday that its recession will be far more severe than forecast, making it harder to reduce the country's debt burden.

UNACCEPTABLE YIELDS

Underlining fears about faltering global growth, the World Trade Organization cut its global trade growth forecast to 2.5 percent from 3.7 percent on Friday. The new forecast, dragged down by Europe, would put trade growth at less than half of the previous 20-year average.

In bond markets, the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was up 4/32 in price for a yield of 1.751 percent.

Yields on Spain and Italy's 10-year bonds were slightly higher, while demand for German government bonds also eased as investors adjusted positions ahead of the weekend amid the growing speculation that Spain is preparing for a bailout. December Bund futures settled at 140.14, down 0.05 percent.

The ECB's new plan that requires struggling countries to submit to fiscal rehabilitation programs in order to qualify for bond-buying support in the open market has been a key factor in the sharp drop in Italian and Spanish borrowing costs and the 15-20 percent surge in major stock markets.
