As part of the DailyBuzz Food Tastemaker program I was selected to create a low-sugar beverage recipe with Sweet?N Low sweetener.

No problemo!

We love wine. Underline, Bold, Italicize, Caps ? LOVE.?Now you definitely know how much we love wine.

But this time of year, we like our wine a bit spiced. And warm. Don?t you? That is why it was a no-brainer for me when I was given this assignment.

Sweet?N Low has made life a bit easier for people like my dad that are either borderline diabetic or diabetic. Because of my dad, we usually go around about adding sugar to many of my recipes by using Sweet?N Low sweetener in place of sugar.?My dad loves his sweets and these hot drinks, but without the help of Sweet?N Low sweetener, he wouldn?t be able to enjoy them.

Genetic clues to insulin production: Genomic analysis method helps track genetic contributors relevant to diabetes

Dec. 23, 2012 ? In research published online Dec. 23, 2012 in the journal Nature Genetics, scientists have found three new and relatively rare genetic variants that influence insulin production, offering new clues about the genetic factors behind diabetes.

"Studying genetic variants -- even rare ones -- helps us learn how genes affect health and disease," said Karen Mohlke, PhD, one of the study's senior authors and associate professor of genetics at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. "In this study, we've implicated new genes as playing a role in insulin processing and secretion."

The study is also the first time genetic insights have been reported using exome array genotyping, a new tool that is less costly than genetic sequencing. This analysis allows scientists to quickly screen DNA samples for known variants in specific genes. It is especially helpful for testing variants that are rare.

"The exome array allowed us to test a large number of individuals -- in this case, more than 8,000 people -- very efficiently," said Mohlke. "We expect that this type of analysis will be useful for finding low-frequency variants associated with many complex traits, including obesity or cancer."

The scientists pulled data from a large health study directed by researchers at the University of Eastern Finland. A research team including postdoctoral scientist Jeroen Huyghe at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor led the statistical analysis, which integrated genetic data and detailed health records for a sample of 8,229 Finnish males.

Diabetes, which affects more than 25 million people in the United States, results from problems with the body's ability to produce or use insulin. Rather than pinpointing one gene behind the disease, scientists believe there are a whole host of genes that interact with health and lifestyle factors to influence a person's chances of getting the disease.

The study revealed that certain variants of three genes -- called TBC1D30, KANK1 and PAM -- are associated with abnormal insulin production or processing, even in people without diabetes. The genes may predispose such individuals to developing the disease.

As a next step, the researchers plan to continue to investigate how these genes may lead to diabetes. They also expect the results will inspire other scientists to use exome analysis to look at the genetic factors behind other complex diseases.

In addition to Mohlke, the study's co-Principal Investigators included Michael Boehnke, PhD, of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and Markku Laakso, MD, of the University of Eastern Finland and Kuopio University Hospital.

In the U.S., funding for the research came from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), components of the National Institutes of Health.

Holiday gift to stargazers: The Christmas sky

The Yuletide evening sky is especially rewarding, with much of the eastern swathe filled with brilliant stars ? sort of a celestial Christmas tree.

Distinctive groupings of stars forming part of the recognized constellation outlines, or lying within their boundaries, are known as asterisms. Ranging in size from sprawling naked-eye figures to minute stellar settings, they are found in every quarter of the sky and at all seasons of the year.?

The larger asterisms ? ones like the Big Dipper in Ursa Major and the Great Square of Pegasus ? are often better known than their host constellations. One of the most famous is in the northwest these frosty December evenings.?

The Northern Cross
The brightest six stars of the constellation Cygnus (the Swan) ? which was known simply as the ?Bird? in ancient times ? compose an asterism popularly called the Northern Cross. [Night Sky Observing Guide for December 2012 (Gallery)]

Bright Deneb decorates the top of the Cross. Albereo, at the foot of the Cross, is really a pair of stars of beautifully contrasting colors: a third-magnitude orange star and its fifth-magnitude blue companion are clearly visible in even a low-power telescope. (In astronomy, lower magnitudes signify relatively brighter objects. Venus' magnitude is around -5, for example, while the full moon's is about -13.)

While usually regarded as a summertime pattern, the Northern Cross is best oriented for viewing now. It? appears to stand majestically upright on the northwest horizon at around 8:30 p.m. local time, forming an appropriate Christmas symbol. (And just before dawn on Easter morning, the cross lies on its side in the eastern sky.)

The Christmas package
Look over toward the southeast part of the sky at about the same time, 8:30 p.m. or so. Can you see a large package in the sky, tied with a pretty bow across the middle? Four bright stars outline the package, while three others make up the decorative bow. [Stunning Night Sky Photos of December 2012]

Now you can see how our modern imagination might work, but tradition tells us that those seven stars formed a mighty hunter called Orion, the most brilliant of the constellations and visible from every inhabited part of the Earth. Two stars mark his shoulders, two more his knees and three his belt.

As is also the case with the mighty Hercules, the figure of Orion has been associated in many ancient cultures with great national heroes, warriors or demigods. Yet in contrast to Hercules, who was credited with a detailed series of exploits, Orion seems to us a vague and shadowy figure.?

The ancient mythological stories of Orion are so many and so confused that it is almost impossible to choose among them. Even the origin of the name Orion is obscure, though some scholars have suggested a connection with the Greek "Arion," meaning "warrior."?

The myths all tend to agree that he was the mightiest hunter in the world, and he is always pictured in the stars with his club upraised in his right hand. Hanging from his upraised left hand is the skin of a great lion he has killed. Orion is brandishing this skin in the face of Taurus, the Bull, who is charging him.??

The heavenly manger
The legendary French astronomer Nicolas Camille Flammarion (1842-1925) referred to the three belt stars of Orion as "The Three Kings." If we consider these three stars to represent the Magi, then it's fitting that the star cluster known as Preasepe (the Manger) lies not far to the east, within the faint zodiacal constellation of Cancer.

A manger is a trough or open box in which feed for horses or cattle is placed. The Book of St. Luke tells us that the baby Jesus was set down in a manger because there was no room at the local inn. In our current Yuletide evening sky, Preasepe thus can represent the manger where Christ was placed...?

The constellation Cancer is practically an empty space in the sky, positioned between the Twin Stars (Pollux and Castor) of Gemini and the Sickle of Leo. It?s completely devoid of any bright stars and would probably not be considered a constellation at all, if not for the fact that there had to be a sign of the Zodiac between Gemini and Leo.

In the middle of Cancer are two stars called the Aselli ("donkeys") that are feeding from the manger; Asselus Borealis and Asselus Australis bracket Preasepe to the north and south, respectively.

To the unaided eye, the manger appears as a soft, fuzzy patch or dim glow. But in good binoculars and low-power telescopes, it is a beautiful object to behold, appearing to contain a smattering of several dozen stars. Using his crude telescope, Galileo wrote in 1610 of seeing Preasepe not as one fuzzy star, but as? " ... a mass of more than 40 small stars."?

The shepherd?s star
If you are up about an hour or so before sunrise, look toward the east-southeast to get a glimpse of what Flammarion described as "The Shepherd?s Star," the planet Venus. He wrote:

"She shines in the east in the morning, with a splendid brightness which eclipses that of all the stars. She is, without comparison, the most magnificent star of our sky; the star of sweet confidences."

Indeed, Venus is always bright. This year, it will remind those who rise early on Christmas morning of the Biblical "Star in the East."

Telescope targets
Venus may be rather disappointing to those who receive a telescope as a holiday gift, appearing as nothing more than a dazzling disk of light. But there are two other splendid planetary targets to gaze at.

That very bright 'star" that you notice at day?s end in December, glowing about one-quarter of the way up from the east-northeast horizon right after sundown, is actually Jupiter. The gas giant is a superb telescopic showpiece, with cloud bands crossing its disk and a retinue of four large moons. On Christmas night, Jupiter will be visible just above the waxing gibbous moon, making for an eye-catching sight.

And lastly, in the predawn morning sky is "the lord of the rings," Saturn, which this week rises above the east-southeast horizon around 3 a.m. local time and just before sunrise can be found about 30 degrees above and to the right of Venus.

Your clenched fist held at arm's length measures about 10 degrees, so Saturn will appear about "three fists" up and to Venus?s right. .A telescope magnifying 30-power or more will reveal Saturn?s famous rings, now tilted almost 19 degrees to our line of sight.

Tips For Successfully Marketing Your Internet Business - Maynas Eric

How do you feel about website marketing? Do you research ways to improve your business promotion, then implement them? There are a ton of great tools out there to help you learn more about website marketing, like books, videos, magazine articles, web posts and more. You need to set up plans and goals. Read these tips and see if they lead you to a good starting point.

One way to boost the PageRank for your online commerce site is to offer a limited-time promotion. If the deal is good enough, you can ?buy? PageRank because consumer news and deals sites will link to yours. This is the same concept as a company selling an item at a loss, with the expectation that it will turn into a profitable situation at a later time.

Explore existing research about the psychological and emotional connections that people associate with certain webpages and online marketing communications. There are factors of a psychological nature that impact how your brand is perceived by a customer. Some of these factors are layout, color and theme. Understanding these suggestions is critical to optimizing your company?s operations.

TIP! To make your online advertisements more effective, make use of words like ?limited? and ?special?. People like to own things that are not commonly available.

It is common knowledge that an authority position in a business generates respect. Let others know that you hold a ranked position within your company. You can refer to yourself as the ?President? or ?CEO? of your company.

Always back up what you say in your ads with concrete examples. It?s common for people to not trust advertising copy. There are a wide array of supporting tools you can use to back up your claims and improve customer confidence, including guarantees, references, testimonials and studies. When you are dropping unproven statements throughout your site, people will ignore and dismiss you and your site.

Study your competitors and choose the best of their sales and advertising tactics to enhance your own. If you see yourself as a potential customer for their products, then they are doing something right. You should find a way to incorporate these ideas into your strategy.

TIP! Give visitors to your website a service or some type of product for free. Many will visit for the free offer.

By offering to donate a portion of your profits to charity you can generate interest, trust and, ultimately, sales. Most people like to help those in need, so this can be a good sales strategy that creates a win-win situation. You should make sure to clearly advertise this without being excessive. Even a small donation can increase your sales, as people like to know their money is going to a good cause.

Give your customers the chance to sign up to your Ezine. This effective marketing tool is especially potent if you create an interesting Ezine that promotes a strong relationship with subscribers. Help your readers get to know you by sprinkling photographs of yourself enjoying time with your family or employees throughout your Ezine. Also, add short, humorous tidbits about your home life or your relationship with employees. A fascinating informational article on your Ezine can spark customer interest. One suggestion is a ?how to? article.

One way to ensure more visits to your website is unique content. Relevant articles will also improve your visibility to the major search engines. Giving people items that they cannot find anywhere, but your site is a great way to market.

TIP! Give potential customers a reason to visit your site. Offer certain e-books or products for steep discounts for one or two days.

Make sure you have internal links with keywords. People typically stay on a website for a very short time. If you have relevant posts showcased near what they are looking at, they are more likely to keep clicking within your website. Keep your audience engaged through internal linking that can boost your site?s search rankings.

Make sure you use popular social networking areas when you are planning your Internet marketing; Facebook and Twitter are among the biggest. Your will be visible to your customers at all time if you use social media websites, this will give you the opportunity to send out quick promos. However, beware of being overly promotional in your comments and tweets. You should give them good quality content that will have a marketing message here and there.

Doing business on the internet is often an impersonal, anonymous affair. This is an especially effective tool for small and independently owned businesses who rely on personal selling and relationship marketing to create customers for life.

TIP! One online marketing strategy is encouraging your visitors to purchase your product by offering discounted prices. Place the discounted price right next to the product?s original price.

How your site looks and operates is as important as what you are selling. Test all website functionality on a regular basis. If your store is not working well, customers will not stay.

A great affiliate marketing tip to use is to take full advantage of things like image searches performed by customers. When a browser online searches some type of keyword, you will have a better chance of being found if you actually tag your images with the proper keywords. Even though it?s an image, it will still be indexed along with your site. Visitors who might just be looking for information sometimes end up looking through your site. That makes you more popular and breeds familiarity for your brand.

You should approach banner advertising differently, and go for a unique approach when designing one for your website. The more appealing and original your banner ad appears, the more people you?ll have clicking on it.

TIP! Create a FAQ section on your site in order to improve customer satisfaction. This help your traffic see that you are important to them and are there to address their concerns as quickly as possible.

You?ve started creating your marketing plan, are you now ready to try new ideas? Do you want to apply the things in this article for your business? This means you need to start improving your overall marketing plan strategically. After taking these steps, you can be successful.

2012 In Review: See How Astrology Played A Part In The Major ...

By Tarot.com

2012 was an eventful year for all of us, on both a personal and a global scale. Wild weather, political uprisings and economic shakeups rattled us all, and it's only the beginning of a period of profound change. Join us as we take a look back at the key Astrology events of 2012 and how they played out.

All Year Long: The Sun Approaches Solar Maximum
2012 has seen more solar activity that usual as the Sun approaches its solar max, which is the peak of its 11-year cycle. Earth experienced more solar flares than usual, and these fiery surges are known for disrupting power grids, GPS and airplane flights worldwide. But not only do solar flares affect Earth physically, they affect each of us on a deeply personal level. The Sun is our primary influence, shaping our character and moods on a daily basis. So if you felt a bit "off" in 2012, you can blame a large part of it on the Sun's solar cycle nearing solar max!

May 20, 2012: New Moon Solar Eclipse In Gemini
The turbo-charged New Moon Solar Eclipse in Gemini on May 20 was an event so powerful that it was pointed out by the ancient Maya as a rare occasion when the Earth, Sun, Moon, and Pleiades would align to create great forces of transformation. Many claim Nostradamus also referenced this date in his Quatrains, as well. Our own master astrologers called out this "annular eclipse" (when the Moon's diameter appears just slightly smaller than the Sun, making the Sun look like a ring), as a time of information overload, when our minds would become clouded as dreamy Neptune made a stressful square to the New Moon. A strong 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck northern Italy on this day -- will there be more to come as a part of these transformational times?

June 5, 2012: Sun Conjunct Venus
It is one thing to feel the effects of Astrology, but it's quite another amazement when you can actually see it! On June 5, millions of people reached for their safety goggles to look up and watch as Venus passed between the Earth and the Sun. The love planet appeared as a small speck visible to the naked eye in this once-in-a-lifetime event, which won't happen again until 2117. This Venus-Sun conjunction was more than just great media -- it was great news for love and relationships, which were infused with new and positive energy around this time. Did you feel it?

June 24, 2012 And September 19, 2012: Uranus Square Pluto
Master astrologers have been abuzz about Uranus square Pluto, as the two planets make an epic series of seven squares from 2012 to 2015. This series of seven exact squares between Uranus, the planet of radical change, and Pluto, the planet of transformation, signals a period of great change on a personal and global scale. The first of these exact squares took place on June 24 and Sept. 19, 2012, and we'll continue to be rattled by these two planets as we move into 2013 and beyond. The effect is an environment of revolution that will eventually lead to a whole new way of life. In 2012 we got a taste of the big changes to come, including housing, insurance and bank failures, the Occupy movement, the Tea Party, concern for the environment and overall economic uncertainty. Even Hostess went bankrupt, putting the future of the Twinkie in jeopardy. Stay tuned, it's going to be wild to watch!

October 29, 2012: Full Moon In Taurus
October's powerful Full Moon in Taurus hung overhead as Hurricane Sandy bore down on the East Coast of the United States, and at the same time there was a nasty square between Mercury, which rules transportation and communication, and Neptune, which rules water. This cosmic combination strengthened "Frankestorm" into a Category 2 superstorm that was the largest Atlantic hurricane on record, causing at least $20 billion in damage and killing at least 199 people in seven countries on the path of the storm. In New York City, the streets, tunnels and subway lines were flooded, and power was lost in and around the city. One of our own astrologers, Maria DeSimone, not only forewarned of this event, but her own house and car were damaged in the storm. We are grateful she and her loved ones are OK, and she is now busy rebuilding her life. We also give her permission to say "I told you so."

November 6 - 26, 2012: Mercury Retrograde
Mischievous planet Mercury was retrograde from Election Day on Nov. 6, 2012, through Thanksgiving, finally turning direct on November 26. Mercury Retrograde messes with communication, technology and transportation, which is not ideal when it comes to counting votes and traveling home for the holidays. Mercury put a backspin on most of November, and we saw its effects on Election Day with long lines and confusion at the polls. Among the Election Day news headlines was a story about a voting machine in Pennsylvania that kept choosing "Romney" even when the "Obama" button was pushed repeatedly. Thanksgiving holiday travel was also disrupted for many, and we suspect there was many an overcooked turkey.

December 21, 2012: Sun In Capricorn, Winter Solstice -- End Of The World?!
No, December 21, 2012 is not the end of the world. It's just the end of a cycle in the Mayan calendar, but we know many people are frightened as the infamous date grows near. No longer a distant date in the theoretical future, many are anxious to know what will happen and what, if anything, we should do to prepare. Astrologer Emily Trinkhaus explains that the ending of the "Great Cycle" in the Mayan calendar does not signal the end of the world, but a new way of living in the world. This parallels the many things we've heard about Uranus square Pluto from Astrologers Rick Levine and Jeff Jawer, which mean that as we near the end of 2012, we are at a pivotal point in a shift in consciousness. The next few years will be dramatic, and could ultimately lead to a whole new way of life! Bring on 2013!

Internet Marketing Rules Blog: Articles And Press Releases To Get ...

Most people online aren?t making money at all in their internet business. This can happen for a number of reasons. They may lack the discipline to keep going when times are tough. They don?t see ?instant? results so they quit. They don?t implement backend marketing into their mix. And they refuse to seek help from others who have been down their same path.

You can?t be this way. If you?re struggling online, you need to get as much help as possible if you want to remain competitive in your niche. If you?re currently on the edge of giving up and you?re tired of marketing online with no sales coming in, then you should re-evaluate what you are doing, and how you can make it better.

In today?s lesson, I want to share with you 2 internet marketing tips that you can use to bring your business back to life, and start getting the sales and profits that you are looking for. I assure you that these techniques are very easy, and they take no more than 30 minutes out of your day to do. Here?s the first thing that you can do to start taking your sales to the next level:

1) Submit articles

When you write up articles online, you give yourself a voice. Many people will ?hear? this voice and will follow you and read your articles on a weekly basis because they like what they read. Writing and submitting articles is one of the best ways that you can start getting traffic to your website immediately.

So where do you submit articles to? You should submit them to the article directories. I personally submit to only 2 article directories, as they are the top article directories on the net. It doesn?t make sense to submit to a massive amount of article directories because your efforts will end in futility.

People start their search at the search engines and type in a certain query. You want your articles to be found on the first page of the search engines - so that you can get this traffic to your articles. Here?s another great way to take your sales to the next. It?s just as easy as submitting articles:

2) Press releases

There?s a major press release company on the internet called ?PRweb? that offers a magnificent press release package to their consumers. Unfortunately, if you want to submit your press releases here, it will cost you $80 or more just for 1 press release. If you don?t want to spend that much on a press release, there are other options.

You could submit to the free press release websites. There are many of them online, and alot of them are very effective. Some of them offer paid services, but I think you can get your money?s worth if you just stick with the free submissions. You can definitely get traffic back to your website because of it.

These 2 marketing tips are things that you need to know if you want to have the thriving and successful internet business that you are looking for online. Articles and press releases are effective, and you should consider using them today.

Good luck with using these 2 strategies in your internet business now.

Amazon Instant Video now available on some Google TV devices

Hot on the heels of making it available on the iPhone and iPod touch, Amazon's now bringing its Instant Video service to Mountain View's TV platform. Granted, the on-demand application doesn't appear to be compatible with some devices at the moment, with a few folks pointing out that they are not seeing it be friendly with their particular Google TV-powered set-top box -- including ones such as the Logitech Revue and the (much) newer Vizio Co-Star. Here's to hoping the giant e-tailer makes Instant Video friendly with more Google TVs pretty soon -- until then, however, hit the more coverage link to check out Amazon's own list of compatible devices.

Buying or Selling? Protect Yourself From Shady Realtors - Boston ...

More good news on the housing front: If you're in the market (or testing the market) to buy a home, now might be a great time.

According to Bloomberg News, sales of previously owned homes has climbed to three-year high. In fact, this very housing boom is predicted to help the overall economy by increasing consumer confidence in industries other than housing.

That's fabulous news for house hunters, but even better news for those who are trying to sell their homes.

For home buyers, they might be seeing a larger inventory, as previously hesitant sellers are now ready to put their homes on the market.

For sellers, they are now feeling ready to take the plunge, as the prospect of multiple offers might entice many to set their home at a higher asking price than they could have done last year.

Of course, with the increase in demand, one can only imagine the bidding wars taking place. And in many cases, the unsuspecting buyer or seller ends up in an unfavorable position in a bidding war when dealing with unscrupulous real estate agents.

If you're looking to buy a home, your choice of realtor is very important. How can you protect yourself against a shady realtor?

Here are a few pointers:

If you're a buyer, don't sign an exclusivity contract. Some realtors will have you sign a contract that says you are bound to them for the purchase of your home. These might be common for sellers, since it makes sense to list your home with only one agent. But as for buyers, it's not always wise to stick with one buyers' agent.

Take time to read any paperwork. Don't let the agent stick piles of paper in front of you and ask you to sign as she hovers over your shoulder. Take the papers home and look at them carefully.

Find your own lender and inspector. Your real estate agent might tell you she has an incredible mortgage deal with a broker she knows. She may even try to push a certain lender on you. Shop around for the right mortgage and always ask for a Truth In Lending disclosure. The same theory applies to inspectors -- i.e., shop around.

Buying a house can be great, but if you're not careful, it can be a nightmare. When in doubt, it might be wise to keep a real estate lawyer in your back pocket. Just in case.

Leadership The Tipping Point to Small Business Sales Success

Leadership is so often focused at the executive level for small business as it should be. Yet for sales success, to be able to consistently achieve the small business goals to increase sales requires self leadership for every person on the sales team as well as those in sales management. For many small businesses, the small business owner is the sales management or part of the sales management team.

sales-success

Great leaders at any level in the organization share some common characteristics as noted in a recent article in Inc. magazine.

Yet what is observed by the followers of leaders are the behaviors and how those behaviors match the followers? expectations.

This leads to the question of how to develop worthy leaders at any level of the small business nd especially within the sales team?

Leadership development from the department to organizational levels is the next generation of talent management where the talents of the workforce from top down are aligned to the organizations? strategies, structure, processes, rewards and people. (Jay Galbraith 5 Star Model). No longer can talent management within small business be isolated to just human resources or to the small business owner. When embraced throughout the small business, a tipping point happens and the entire workforce is now a culture of high performance driving not only increase sales, but all other operations as well.

With small businesses operating with fewer and fewer people, sales success is dependent upon all employees and not just the salespersons. Everyone in the organization is a leader who is responsible for achieving the results through? the demonstration of positive core values.? Their behaviors are a combination of their own emotional intelligence, general intelligence including skills and knowledge, common sense along with positive attitudes and habits.

Each of these capacities could be viewed as a leadership development talent and require some sort of measurement. From those measurements, benchmarks can be established individually to allow employees to become even better leaders and therefore achieve even greater sales success.

If your goal as the small business owner is to achieve greater success in 2013 than 2012, maybe it is time for leadership development in each member of your sales team and then continue those talent management efforts toward each employee in your organization. By taking this action, you will increase sales and have the small business sale success you deserve.

P.S. Good to great leadership begins from within each individual. This FREE webinar on Thursday, January 3, 2013, Be True To You, starts that reflection process with tips as to what is require to create self leadership.

Young offenders who work, don't attend school may be more antisocial

Dec. 20, 2012 ? Many high school students work in addition to going to school, and some argue that employment is good for at-risk youths. But a new study has found that placing juvenile offenders in jobs without ensuring that they attend school may make them more antisocial.

The study, by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh, Temple University, and the University of California, Irvine, appears in the journal Child Development.

While evidence suggests that working long hours during the school year has negative effects on adolescent antisocial behavior among middle- and upper-income youths, much less is known about how employment during the school year affects high-risk adolescents, particularly with respect to delinquent behavior.

To learn about the association between employment and antisocial behavior among high-risk youths, researchers studied about 1,350 serious juvenile offenders who were 14 to 17 years old at the beginning of the study. They used monthly information about employment, school attendance, and antisocial behavior over the course of five years; examples of antisocial behavior included beating up somebody, purposely destroying or damaging properly, and knowingly buying or selling stolen goods. The youths, most of whom were from low-income families, had been convicted of a felony or similarly serious non-felony offense (such as a misdemeanor sexual assault or weapons offense). School was defined as high school, vocational school, GED programs, and college.

Going to school regularly without working was associated with the least antisocial behavior, and high-intensity employment (defined as more than 20 hours a week) was associated with diminished antisocial behavior only among youths who also attended school regularly. Youths who worked long hours and didn't attend school regularly were at the greatest risk for antisocial behavior, followed by youths who worked long hours and didn't go to school at all. These effects occurred during adolescence; by early adulthood, working more than 20 hours a week was associated with lower antisocial behavior.

"Our results suggest caution in recommending employment in and of itself as a remedy for adolescents' antisocial behavior," according to Kathryn Monahan, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Pittsburgh, the study's lead researcher.

"As an intervention strategy during young adulthood, placing juvenile offenders in jobs may be a wise idea. But for adolescents of high school age, placing juvenile offenders in jobs without ensuring that they also attend school may exacerbate, rather than diminish, their antisocial behavior."

Biological concrete for constructing 'living' building materials with lichens, mosses

Dec. 20, 2012 ? The Structural Technology Group has developed and patented a type of biological concrete that supports the natural, accelerated growth of pigmented organisms. The material, which has been designed for the fa?ades of buildings or other constructions in Mediterranean climates, offers environmental, thermal and aesthetic advantages over other similar construction solutions. The material improves thermal comfort in buildings and helps to reduce atmospheric CO2 levels.

In studying this concrete, the researchers at the Structural Technology Group of the Universitat Polit?cnica de Catalunya ? BarcelonaTech (UPC) have focused on two cement-based materials. The first of these is conventional carbonated concrete (based on Portland cement), with which they can obtain a material with a pH of around 8. The second material is manufactured with a magnesium phosphate cement (MPC), a hydraulic conglomerate that does not require any treatment to reduce its pH, since it is slightly acidic.

On account of its quick setting properties, magnesium phosphate cement has been used in the past as a repair material. It has also been employed as a biocement in the field of medicine and dentistry, indicating that it does not have an additional environmental impact.

The innovative feature of this new (vertical multilayer) concrete is that it acts as a natural biological support for the growth and development of certain biological organisms, to be specific, certain families of microalgae, fungi, lichens and mosses.

Having patented the idea, the team is investigating the best way to promote the accelerated growth of these types of organisms on the concrete. The goal of the research is to succeed in accelerating the natural colonisation process so that the surface acquires an attractive appearance in less than a year. A further aim is that the appearance of the fa?ades constructed with the new material should evolve over time, showing changes of colour according to the time of year and the predominant families of organisms. On these kinds of buildings, other types of vegetation are prevented from appearing, lest their roots damage construction elements.

Three layers of material

In order to obtain the biological concrete, besides the pH, other parameters that influence the bioreceptivity of the material have been modified, such as porosity and surface roughness. The result obtained is a multilayer element in the form of a panel which, in addition to a structural layer, consists of three other layers: the first of these is a waterproofing layer situated on top of the structural layer, protecting the latter from possible damage caused by water seeping through.

The next layer is the biological layer, which supports colonisation and allows water to accumulate inside it. It acts as an internal microstructure, aiding retention and expelling moisture; since it has the capacity to capture and store rainwater, this layer facilitates the development of biological organisms.

The final layer is a discontinuous coating layer with a reverse waterproofing function. This layer permits the entry of rainwater and prevents it from escaping; in this way, the outflow of water is redirected to where it is aimed to obtain biological growth.

CO2 reduction

The new material, which has various applications, offers environmental, thermal and aesthetic advantages, according to the research team led by Antonio Aguado and supported by Ignacio Segura and Sandra Manso. From an environmental perspective, the new concrete absorbs and therefore reduces atmospheric CO2, thanks to its biological coating.

At the same time, it has the capacity to capture solar radiation, making it possible to regulate thermal conductivity inside the buildings depending on the temperature reached. The biological concrete acts not only as an insulating material and a thermal regulator, but also as an ornamental alternative, since it can be used to decorate the fa?ade of buildings or the surface of constructions with different finishes and shades of colour; it has been designed for the colonisation of certain areas with a variety of colours, without the need to cover an entire surface. The idea is to create a patina in the form of a biological covering or a "living" painting.

There are also possibilities for its use in garden areas as a decorative element and as a sustainable means of blending buildings and constructions into the landscape.

Architectural renovation

The material lends itself to a new concept of vertical garden, not only for newly built constructions, but also for the renovation of existing buildings. Unlike the current vegetated fa?ade and vertical garden systems, the new material supports biological growth on its own surface; therefore, complex supporting structures are not required, and it is possible to choose the area of the fa?ade to which the biological growth is to be applied.

Vegetated fa?ades and vertical gardens depend on a plant substrate in some type of container, or they use cultures that are totally substrate-independent, such as hydroponic cultures. However, they require complex systems attached to the construction itself (layers of material) and even adjacent structures made of metal or plastic. This can lead to complications associated with additional loads, the reduction of light, or the reduction of space around the building. With the new "green" concrete, the organisms can grow directly on the multi-layered material.

Patent and commercialisation The research has led to a doctoral thesis, which Sandra Manso is writing. At present, the experimental campaign corresponding to the phase of biological growth is being conducted, and this will be completed at the UPC and the University of Ghent (Belgium). This research has received support from Antonio G?mez Bolea, a lecturer in the Faculty of Biology at the University of Barcelona, who has made contributions in the field of biological growth on construction materials.

At present, a patent is in the process of being obtained for this innovative product, and the Catalan company ESCOFET 1886 S.A., a manufacturer of concrete panels for architectural and urban furniture purposes, has already shown an interest in commercialising the material.

Obama to lay out gun policy first steps after Newtown tragedy ...

(CNN) ? With the shock and horror from Newtown giving way to anger and calls for action, President Barack Obama will announce his first concrete steps Wednesday in addressing the raging debate about gun policy.

Obama plans to announce that Vice President Joe Biden will lead an inter-agency process to develop policy in the wake of the Connecticut elementary school massacre.

White House aides say Obama won?t announce major policy decisions Wednesday, but he will outline his administration?s path forward.

?These tragedies must end. And to end them, we must change,? Obama told a packed auditorium at Newtown High School on Sunday.

?No single law, no set of laws, can eliminate evil from the world, or prevent every senseless act of violence in our society. But that can?t be an excuse for inaction,? he said.

Obama vowed: ?In the coming weeks, I will use whatever power this office holds to engage my fellow citizens ? from law enforcement to mental health professionals to parents and educators ? in an effort aimed at preventing more tragedies like this. Because what choice do we have??

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-California, has said she will introduce legislation to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the president supports that effort.

The ?complex problem? also calls for ?engaging mental health professionals, law enforcement officials, educators, parents and communities? to find solutions, he said.

Obama also wants to close ?the so-called gun show loophole which allows people to buy weapons without going through the background checks that are standard when you purchase ? them retail, Carney said.

Meanwhile, heartbreaking funerals continue in Newtown. Those being buried Wednesday include several more students and a beloved teacher.

They are among the 27 people killed when gunman Adam Lanza shot his mother four times in the head before shooting his way into into Sandy Hook Elementary, opening fire on staff and students no older than 7. Lanza then killed himself.

The question of what prompted the rampage continues to elude investigators.

So far, they have been unable to retrieve data from a computer in Lanza?s home, a law enforcement official said Tuesday.

The gunman apparently smashed the computer and extensively damaged the hard drive, the official said, adding that the FBI is assisting Connecticut State Police.

Authorities have said the shooter took three of his mother?s weapons ? two handguns and a Bushmaster AR-15 rifle ? to the elementary school.

The National Rifle Association commented Tuesday for the first time since the massacre, saying it was shocked and heartbroken by the tragedy. The group is planning to hold a news conference on Friday.

?Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting,? it said. ?The NRA is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again.?

Gun debate intensifies

While the NRA has been largely quiet, the national debate over guns is reaching a new high ? some calling for stricter control, others for more access.

?In the state of Texas, with our concealed handgun license, if you have been duly backgrounded and trained and you are a concealed handgun license carrying individual, you should be able to carry your handgun anywhere in this state,? Gov. Rick Perry said Monday at a tea party event. He later added that he was referring to public property.

Meanwhile, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder vetoed legislation that would have allowed those licensed and trained to carry concealed pistols in schools and other public places, his office said Tuesday.

Citizens across the country are also weighing in, particularly on social media.

Bill Mingin?s gun lay under the floorboards of his attic for 40 years, he said in an iReport.

?I thought I needed it ?just in case,?? the New Jersey man said.

But after the Newtown massacre, he thought of selling it ? but didn?t want it ending up in ?the hands of a bad person.?

?So I smashed it with a sledge hammer, and threw it in the river. No one will ever be hurt with this deadly toy. Let?s get rid of the guns. Let it start with mine.?

Others say future tragedies can be avoided by arming teachers.

A bill introduced in the South Carolina legislature Tuesday would allow school employees with concealed weapons licenses to carry guns at schools. The bill would require those workers to be certified as marksmen and use only breakable bullets to avoid ricochets.

The debate has also sparked fierce dialogue at times.

Larry Pratt, executive director of Gun Owners of America, said if more guns had been at Sandy Hook Elementary School, most victims would be alive.

?Since we have concealed carry laws in all of our country now, people can get a concealed firearm. And yet we have laws that say not in schools,? Pratt said. ?And so in the very places that have been sought out by monsters such as the murderer of these adults and children, we?re saying, ?No, we don?t want you to be able to defend yourself.? It?s better that you just sit there and wait to be killed. And we find that morally incomprehensible.?

CNN?s Piers Morgan questioned whether more guns are the answer in a country with more than 300 million non-military firearms. He also challenged Pratt on the issue of high-power assault rifles.

?Post what happened at Sandy Hook, your answer to this problem of repeated use of this weapon with these high-capacity magazines is to continue letting Americans buy them with impunity, and to not concern yourself with these mass shootings, is that right,? Morgan asked.

?The 2nd Amendment means what it says, and meanwhile, you want to continue laws against self-defense,? Pratt responded.

A long series of final goodbyes

Back in Newtown, bereaved family members buried loved ones.

Victoria ?Vicki? Soto, a first-grade teacher who tried to shield her students from bullets, was among them Wednesday.

A police honor guard saluted her casket as bagpipers played outside the Lordship Community Church in Stratford, Connecticut. The church set up more than 100 chairs outside the building to accommodate the overflow of people paying their respects.

?She would not hesitate to think to save anyone else before herself, and especially children,? her mother Donna has said of Soto. ?She loved them more than life, and she would definitely put herself in front of them any day.?

Soto, 27, wanted to be a teacher since she was 3 years old.

She ?instinctively went into action when a monster came into her classroom and tried to protect the kids that she loved so much,? cousin James Wiltsie said. ?We just want the public to know that Vicki was a hero.?

Seven-year-old Daniel Barden?s ?fearless? pursuit of happiness earned him ripped jeans, his family said.

Taking after his musician dad, Daniel formed a band with his brother and sister, playing the drums.

?He embodied everything that is wholesome and innocent in the world,? Daniel?s family said.

Caroline Previdi?s relatives also will say their final goodbyes Wednesday.

Even after her death, 6-year-old Caroline continued to touch the lives of others. A Facebook page called ?RIP Caroline Previdi ? Sandy Hook Massacre Victim? had more than 5,400 ?likes? on Wednesday morning.

Charlotte Bacon was another 6-year-old whose life was cut far too short. Charlotte, a beaming bundle of energy under bright red curls, also will be buried Wednesday.

The black hearses with caskets will continue driving though Newtown for days to come.

Range Resources targeting higher oil production at Morne Diablo

Pdf Wednesday, December 19, 2012 by Bevis Yeo

(ASX: RRS) is increasingly enthusiastic about its prospects in Trinidad with the success of its ongoing development program at Morne Diablo.

This is highlighted by the MD 248 and QUN 135 wells that are approaching target depth and have the potential to increase current oil production rates by a total of up to 600 barrels per day (bpd).

Shallow wells targeting the Lower Forest formation have also exceeded forecast targets with initial production rates averaging about 60bpd of oil.

Deep Drilling

Range is currently drilling the MD 248 and QUN 135 wells towards the Lower and Middle Cruse targets respectively.

Based on historical production rates seen in the Middle Cruse Formation, the Lower Cruse Formation is also expected to yield similar initial production rates of 200bpd to 300bpd of oil.

While the previous MD 19 well encountered well?developed Lower Cruse that were structurally low and water?saturated at that location, MD 248 targets the Formation at an updip location where oil is expected to be trapped.

Upon completion of MD248, Rig 8 will drill the first of a series of wells that will test the prolific deep Herrera formation as a primary exploration target, with the Forest and Cruse formations as secondary objectives.

QUN 135 is currently drilling ahead at a depth of 2,300 feet to a total depth of 3,500 feet to test the Middle Cruse formation below the current Lower Forest development area.

Based on historical production rates seen from the Middle Cruse formation, a successful well at this location could have initial production rates of 200bpd to 300bpd.

Lower Forest

Range continues to develop the Lower Forest formation on its Morne Diablo license with shallower capacity rigs and has drilled and completed five new wells during the current quarter, with another three drilling ahead.

Wells from the ongoing development program are exceeding initial expectations in terms of average well performance and initial production rates, offsetting recent operational delays which have caused slippage in the drilling timetable.

The company continues to refurbish and upgrade its drilling rigs to improve their performance and reduce downtime while its Trinidad operations team continues to add drilling and completion personnel required to support the ongoing development programs.

Of the recent wells, two were drilled to test the southern limit of the Forest Formation productive trend and encountered thin Lower Forest sands, allowing Range to define the southern extremity of the Lower Forest trend.

Both wells retain the potential to be side tracked back into the main productive area within the Lower Forest trend.

The QUN 137 well was completed and also encountered the Lower Forest formation with initial production rates of 100bpd of oil while QUN 138 is expected to yield better than average production rates after intersecting a highly resistive feet zone at a depth of between 770 feet and 810 feet within a broader 100 feet of net oil sands.

Range is also preparing to drill the QUN 139 well to a total depth of 1,000 feet to test the Lower Forest.

Beach Marcelle field update

The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) on the Beach Marcelle water flood project is nearing completion after which it will be submitted to the Environmental Authorities for review. The Authorities have 2 to 3 months for review and will then grant the approvals if satisfied.

Once approved, Range will make its applications for both development drilling and the water flood project to the Ministry and Petrotrin for their individual approvals. Once all permits and approvals are in place, Range will commence development, currently forecast for mid?2013.

Beach Marcelle is designed to recover the remaining secondary recovery oil ? estimated at 12.8 million barrels of oil ? left behind by previous water flood schemes in the 1960s.

Morne Diablo Waterflood

The expanded Morne Diablo waterflood program is currently in the reservoir simulation phase, with completion expected early in the first quarter of 2013, and application for approval to follow, with development forecast to commence mid?2013.

Texas

Range is also entering into the final phase of negotiations regarding the sale of its North Chapman Ranch and East Texas Cotton Valley assets in Texas.

It is currently negotiating an agreement for a cash/royalty transaction in line with the previously announced price range of between US$20m and US$40m.

This is expected to be completed in January 2013.

Looking ahead

Range has successfully drilled 21 wells in its Morne Diablo licence and expects to start an extensive development program targeting the deeper Lower Cruse and Middle Cruse formations should the MD 248 and QUN 135 wells be successful.

Drilling activity is also expected to increase across the board with additional crews being recruited and trained to expedite the addition of Range?s remaining two drilling rigs.

All six rigs are expected to be active within the first quarter of 2013.

Arbitrator: Beauty queen defamed pageant, owes $5M

NEW YORK (AP) ? A beauty queen who claimed this year's Miss USA contest was fixed has been ordered to pay the pageant organization $5 million for defamation.

In a decision signed last week, an arbitrator found that the comments from Miss Pennsylvania USA Sheena Monnin were false, harmful and malicious. Monnin had alleged that the five finalists had been selected in advance of the pageant's live telecast.

The arbitrator, Theodore Katz, said Monnin had two motives: "She was a disgruntled contestant who failed to make it past the preliminary competition" and she objected to the pageant's decision to allow transgender contestants. He wrote that the way the contest is judged "precludes any reasonable possibility that the judging was rigged."

Monnin, of Cranberry, Pa., resigned her state title after the pageant. Her allegations on Facebook and NBC's "Today" show cost the pageant a $5 million fee from a potential 2013 sponsor, Katz said.

Monnin's lawyer, Richard Klineburger III, had no comment on the decision, his office said.

Katz said Monnin agreed to arbitrate any disputes when she became a Miss USA contestant, but he wrote in his decision that she and her lawyer didn't participate in the process and claimed they were not required to do so.

The winner of the Miss USA pageant, Olivia Culpo of Rhode Island, competes Wednesday in the Miss Universe pageant.

Father Fred Daley of All Saints Church

SYRACUSE -- A Syracuse Church is offering parents the opportunity to drop off violent video games and toys with the proceeds going to the families who lost children in the Newtown massacre.

Father Fred Daley of All Saints Church, at 112 Lancaster Place, told CNY Central's Jim Kenyon, "Wouldn't it be wonderful if the Christmas tree on Christmas morning could be surrounded by peace and not symbols of violence?"

Fr. Daley says he was shocked at the extreme violence and death depicted in video games with titles like ?Assassins,? ?God of War,? and ?Grand Theft Auto.?

"They're sick, very sick. That's just a sign of our culture that is so violent," says Fr. Daley.

Fr. Daley says many of his parishioners feel "something has to be done" in response to the killing of 20 children and 6 adults in Newtown, Connecticut last week. He decided to set up baskets at the entrance to the church where people can drop off video games and toys that glorify violence. He is asking that they include the receipts as well.

"We will gather them and bring them back to the stores. The money, we're going to send to Newtown, Connecticut to the various funds that are being sought to aid the families who lost children," says Fr. Daley.

The violent toy and game initiative is being conducted at All Saints Church in Syracuse and Saint Francis of Assisi in Binghamton.

Fr. Daley says he hopes more churches will join in as word of the effort spreads.

Adele still rolling, voted Entertainer of the Year

By Jake Coyle, The Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Though Adele didn't have a new album or a worldwide tour in 2012, she's still rolling. After a year of Grammy glory and James Bond soundtracking, Adele has been voted The Associated Press Entertainer of the Year.

Paul Buck / EPA file

British singer Adele holds her six Grammy Awards in Los Angeles in February.

In 132 ballots submitted by members and subscribers of the AP, Adele easily outpaced other vote-getters like Taylor Swift, "Fifty Shades of Grey" author E.L. James, the South Korean viral video star PSY and the cast of "Twilight." Editors and broadcasters were asked to cast their ballot for the person who had the most influence on entertainment and culture in 2012.

Adele's year began in triumph at the Grammys, took a turn through recording the theme to the 007 film "Skyfall," and ended with the birth of her son in October. The ubiquitous Adele was that rare thing in pop culture: an unqualified sensation, a megastar in a universe of niche hits.

By the end of the year, her sophomore album, "21," had passed 10 million copies sold in the U.S., only the 21st album in the Nielsen SoundScan era (begun in 1991) to achieve diamond status. Buoyed by hits like "Someone Like You" and "Rolling in the Deep" long after its release in early 2011, "21" was also the top-selling album on iTunes for the second year running.

As David Panian, news editor for Michigan's Daily Telegram, put it: "It just seemed like you couldn't turn on the radio without hearing one of her songs."

Video: Schoolchildren sing it like Adele in India

Women have had a lock on the annual Entertainer of the Year selection. Previous winners include Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Betty White and Tina Fey. Stephen Colbert is the lone male winner in the six-year history of voting.

The Grammy Awards in February were essentially the de-facto crowning of the 24-year-old Adele, whose real name is Adele Adkins, as a pop queen. She won six awards, including album of the year. It was also a comeback of sorts for Adele, who performed for the first time since having vocal cord surgery, drawing a standing ovation from the Staples Center crowd.

Accepting the album of the year award, a teary Adele exclaimed: "Mum, girl did good!" The emotional, sniffling singer endeared many viewers to her when she copped in her acceptance speech to having "a bit of snot."

"This record is inspired by something that is really normal and everyone's been through it: just a rubbish relationship," said Adele.

Video: Toddler belts Adele ballad, gains fans worldwide

But her luck in love has since turned, thanks to her boyfriend Simon Konecki. In an interview with Vogue magazine, Adele said she was through with break-up records and done being "a bitter witch." When Adele announced in June that she was having a baby with Konecki, her website promptly crashed under the heavy traffic. Their son was born in October.

With such an avalanche of success and now a mother of a newborn son, Adele has understandably taken a step out of the spotlight. One notable exception was recording the opening credits theme song to "Skyfall." The song was recorded with her "21" producer Paul Epworth at the Abbey Road Studios in London with a 77-piece orchestra. Within hours, it zoomed to the top of digital charts.

"There was an overwhelming embrace of Adele and her music," said Joe Butkiewicz, executive editor of the Times Leader in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. "And that was never more evident to me than when I heard teenagers express their enthusiastic expectations for the new James Bond movie because Adele performed the theme song."

The song recently received a Golden Globe nomination. No Bond theme has ever won the best original song Oscar, but given Adele's awards success thus far, it wouldn't be a stretch to think she has a chance of changing that. The tune is among the 75 short-listed songs in the Academy Awards category.

-- Projects Editor Brooke Lansdale contributed to this report.

Being a member of this demographic however, didn?t necessarily guarantee that she did or could access the best mental health care for her son, Adam Lanza, as he was growing up in Newtown.

Adam Lanza, 20, is responsible for the deadliest mass shooting in the United States at an elementary school. After murdering his mother, he forced his way into the Sandy Hook Elementary School five days ago, where he massacred 20 first graders and six teachers before committing suicide as police tried to intervene.

Described in various reports as a quiet, intelligent student, who had a difficult time socializing in school, and possibly exhibiting signs of Asperger?s syndrome, the question has been asked why couldn?t an individual with $289,800 in alimony get the help her son needed to avert this tragedy?

Lanza?s motives and psychiatric history are unknown at this point and will probably remain so until investigators and behavioral scientists piece together some answers.

Alan Kazdin, director of the Yale Parenting Center, and others, said what has to happen first is identifying a child with problems through proper screening and then accessing the right care, sooner, rather than later.

Vicki Veltri, the state?s health care advocate, said once parents and individuals are ?brave enough? to come forward and seek help, overcoming the continuing stigmatization of mental illness, there are not enough clinicians to serve them, the programs are scattered throughout different agencies and insurers don?t always cover care.

She said there is a correlation between where you live, how much money you make and whether you have public or private coverage. Christine Montgomery, vice president at the Clifford Beers Clinic in New Haven, said middle class families particularly lose out in this system.

?That?s not the way to set public health policy,? Veltri said.

Surprisingly some of the best care is covered by Medicaid for children, who become part of the Behavioral Health Network set up by the state and can get at-home care not covered by private insurance. Continued...

?We have a very strong system for families with state insurance, but a more fractured system for families with private insurance or private pay,? Montgomery said.

Unlike other mass shootings in the U.S., this horrific incident seems to have turned the spotlight on the nation?s fractured mental health care system, with advocates encouraged by statements from national and state leaders, including President Barack Obama and Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy.

?We?re going to need to work on making access to mental health care at least as easy as access to a gun. We?re going to need to look more closely at a culture that all too often glorifies guns and violence,? Obama said at a press conference Wednesday.

Malloy in remarks Monday said the state plans to review policies and procedures that will help prevent future shootings, including reaching out to young people who are clearly in trouble.

The statistics on those who need care and Americans who actually get it are dismal.

Kazdin estimated conservatively that 25 percent of the 311 million people in the United States have a psychiatric disorder. Of those, 70 percent get no treatment with a greater percentage of children, the elderly and minorities on the losing end. According to the National Institutes of Health, almost half the population will experience a psychiatric problem over a lifetime.

Kazdin said they have evidence based treatments that work for a number of disorders, including children experiencing aggressive behavior.

He said any serious changes have to include experts in schools who can screen children who are experiencing problems. ?We need a SWAT team,? Kazdin said.

He offered an analogy to cancer, where there may be great treatments, but they are useless if they are not available to patients or the disease has not been identified.

Other colleagues agreed. Continued...

?We have interventions that have proven effective ...that can actually turn kids and families lives around,? said Steven Marans, director of the Childhood Violent Trauma Center at the Yale Child Study Center, but more clinicians need to be trained in applying them.

?It?s like having discovered penicillin and not having it available to every health care provider in the country,? Marans said.

Veltri, as the healthcare advocate, intervenes when insurers fail to cover treatments and she has found that many psychiatrists and psychologists don?t take insurance, leaving their services out of reach of a large cohort. This is exacerbated by a ?serious capacity issue.?

As a society, Veltri said we have to get over the continuing stigmatization of mental illness. ?Mental health should be integrated into overall health care,? she said. ?We would never tolerate this on the medical side,? she said of the lack of psychiatric beds or long delays for those seeking substance abuse treatment.

Kazdin said lack of clinicians can be helped through use of lay counselors who are properly trained in science-based treatments.

He said there is no one behavior that points to a child who later turns violent. Generally speaking, children who are loners who then turn aggressive and have access to guns are not a good mix.

Adam Lanza conducted his killing spree with weapons owned by his mother, who would take him to target practice, according to multiple reports.

David Abrams, clinic director at Clifford Beers, said there are services out there for families who can navigate the nonprofit network. A common problem however are teens over age 16 who refuse to attend treatment sessions or take medication.

He said it doesn?t appear that Lanza was getting treatment and that mass killings point to psychotic delusional behavior.

Involuntary commitment to a mental health treatment is possible when a person threatens to harm himself or others. Abrams said when they leave the hospital and told to follow up later, they often don?t comply. Continued...

?They fly under the radar. They are not in the system and we don?t have an eye on them,? Abrams said.
