WASHINGTON (AP) ? Former Vice President Dick Cheney had a heart transplant Saturday, after five heart attacks over the past 25 years and countless medical procedures to keep him going. Cheney, 71, waited nearly two years for his new heart, the gift of an unknown donor.

An aide to Cheney disclosed the surgery after it was over, and said the ex-vice president was recovering at a Virginia hospital.

"Although the former vice president and his family do not know the identity of the donor, they will be forever grateful for this lifesaving gift," aide Kara Ahern said in a written statement that was authenticated by several of the Republican politician's close associates.

Cheney was recovering Saturday night at the intensive care unit of Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va., after surgery earlier in the day.

More than 3,100 Americans currently are on the national waiting list for a heart transplant. Just over 2,300 heart transplants were performed last year, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing. And 330 people died while waiting.

According to UNOS, 332 people over age 65 received a heart transplant last year. The majority of transplants occur in 50- to 64-year-olds.

The odds of survival are good. More than 70 percent of heart transplant recipients live at least five years, although survival is a bit lower for people over age 65.

The former vice president suffered a heart attack in 2010, his fifth since the age of 37.

That same year, he had surgery to have a small pump installed to help his heart keep working.

Called a "left ventricular assist device," or LVAD, that device took over the job of the heart's main pumping chamber, powered by special batteries worn in a fanny pack. It helps a person live a fairly normal life while awaiting a heart transplant, although some people receive it as permanent therapy. It was one of the few steps left, short of a transplant, to stay alive in the face of what he acknowledged was "increasing congestive heart failure."

In January 2011, Cheney said he was getting by on the battery-powered heart pump, which made it "awkward to walk around." He also said he hadn't made a decision yet on a transplant, but that "the technology is getting better and better."

Cheney said then that he'd "have to make a decision at some point whether I want to go for a transplant."

By that point, Cheney had been dealing with cardiovascular problems for more than two decades.

In 1988, he had quadruple bypass surgery, two artery-clearing angioplasties and the operation to implant a pacemaker, a device that monitored his heartbeat.

In 2005, Cheney had six hours of surgery on his legs to repair a kind of aneurysm, and in March 2007, doctors discovered deep venous thrombosis in his left lower leg. An ultrasound a month later showed the clot was getting smaller.

In July 2007, he had had a minor surgical procedure to replace the pacemaker.

Cheney served as former President George W. Bush's vice president for eight years, from 2001 until 2009. Cheney was a lightning rod for criticism during Bush's presidency, accused by opponents of often advocating a belligerent U.S. stance in world affairs during wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, wished Cheney a "fast and full recovery" in a post on Twitter. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, Romney's chief challenger, sent a written statement wishing Cheney and his family well and offering his thoughts and prayers.

Like 5 million other Americans, Cheney has had congestive heart failure, meaning his heart had become too weakened to pump properly. That can happen for a variety of reasons, but Cheney's was due to cumulative damage from his multiple heart attacks.

Heart failure kills 57,000 Americans a year and contributes to many more deaths.

Shortly after Cheney's surgery was disclosed, one prominent cardiologist ? Dr. Eric Topol of Scripps Health in La Jolla, Calif. ? raised the issue of whether someone so old should have received a new heart.

"The ethicists will get into this case," he wrote on Twitter.

Others disagreed.

"It is not too old. Age is really not a factor," said Dr. William Zoghbi of Methodist Hospital's DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center in Houston. He is incoming president of the American College of Cardiology, and he spoke from the group's annual conference in Chicago on Saturday.

Zoghbi said Cheney may even fare better than younger people whose immune systems more actively fight new organs, raising concern about rejection.

"I don't see any ethical issues here," Zoghbi said, because a transplant is clearly indicated for someone whose heart is as weak as Cheney's was.

A heart transplant is a race against time. Doctors look to the waiting list for the next qualified candidate who is a good match to the newly donated heart, which typically comes from an accident victim. The patient must get to the operating room quickly, as a newly donated heart stays fresh for only about four to six hours.

During a heart transplant, a mechanical pump keeps blood flowing through the body while surgeons remove the diseased heart ? and in Cheney's case, the previously implanted LVAD ? and connect the new one.

Patients must take immune-suppressing medication for life, to keep their body's immune system from attacking the new, foreign organ. They typically stay in the hospital for a week or two, and require intensive cardiac rehabilitation.

Obamacare's devastating small business tax hikes | The Daily Caller

Mr. Norquist, a native of Massachusetts, has been one of Washington's most effective issues management strategists for over two decades.

Mr. Norquist is president of Americans for Tax Reform (ATR), a coalition of taxpayer groups, individuals and businesses opposed to higher taxes at the federal, state and local levels. ATR organizes the TAXPAYER PROTECTION PLEDGE, which asks all candidates for federal and state office to commit themselves in writing to oppose all tax increases. To date, 172 House members, and 34 Senators have taken the pledge. On the state level, 7 governors and over 1100 state legislators have taken the pledge.

Mr. Norquist also:

* Serves on the board of directors of the National Rifle Association of America.
* Serves on the board of directors of the American Conservative Union.
* Serves as a Contributing Editor to the American Spectator Magazine.
* Serves as president of the American Society of Competitiveness.
* Authored the book Leave Us Alone: Getting the Government's Hands Off Our Money, Our Guns, Our Lives

In the past, Mr. Norquist served as:

* A commissioner on the Advisory Commission on Electronic Commerce.
* A commissioner on the National Commission on Restructuring the Internal Revenue Service.
* Economist and chief speech-writer, U.S. Chamber of Commerce (1983-1984).
* Campaign staff on the 1988, 1992, 1996 Republican Platform Committees.
* Executive director of the National Taxpayers??? Union.
* Executive director of the College Republicans.

In the words of Newt Gingrich, Grover Norquist is "the person who I regard as the most innovative, creative, courageous and entrepreneurial leader of the anti-tax efforts and of conservative grassroots activism in America . . . He has truly made a difference and truly changed American history."

P.J. O'Rourke says, "Grover Norquist is Tom Paine crossed with Lee Atwater plus just a soupcon of Madame Defarge."?

Arianna Huffington calls Norquist "The dark wizard of the Right's anti-tax cult"

Mr. Norquist holds a Masters of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics, both from Harvard University. He lives in Washington, DC with his wife, Samah and his daughters, Grace, and Giselle.

Out of the 20 new or higher taxes in Obamacare, there are four that most hurt small employers.

Before we get to the tax hikes, though, let?s dispense with the fig leaf of ?assistance? that small businesses are given to transition to costly Obamacare mandates. The law creates a ?small employer health credit? through 2014 which theoretically allows a business to claim a credit for up to 35 percent of the cost of providing health insurance to employees.

The problem is, the credit was written in such a Byzantine and confusing way that no small employer is actually taking advantage of it. In a recent cost re-estimate of Obamacare, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office reduced the expected aggregate claims from the credit to just $21 billion, rather than the $41 billion that was estimated at the time of Obamacare?s passage. The IRS has laughably started a full-court public relations press begging employers to try to claim this complicated credit.

Expect the actual utilization of this credit, which President Obama will tout heavily today and Friday, to be very close to zero in the final analysis.

The first tax increase on small employers is a Medicare payroll tax hike. Under Obamacare, the Medicare payroll tax for wages and self-employment earnings in excess of $250,000 ($200,000 for singles) will rise from 2.9 percent to 3.8 percent. This is a direct tax hike in the marginal income tax rate paid by the self-employed and general partners. It will also affect the wage component of Subchapter-S earnings. And since the majority of small employer profits are taxed in brackets that exceed $250,000, this is also a direct marginal tax increase on the majority of small employer profits.

A percentage point may not seem like a lot, but it really is when combined with President Obama?s budgetary plan to raise the top marginal income tax rate from 35 to 39.6 percent. Small employers pay taxes using the individual tax brackets, and the majority of small employer profits are taxed in the top bracket.

Obamacare also imposes a 3.8 percentage point surtax on ?investment income,? starting in 2013. Some of this so-called ?investment income? is actually small business profits. Notably, investors in small businesses (limited partners and passive shareholders in Subchapter-S corporations) will face this tax. Active trade or business income is excluded, but of course most of that will face the higher Medicare tax described above. This provision will make it harder for employers to raise capital in order to create jobs and expand business operations.

Next is the jobs-killing employer mandate. This is the ?little brother? of the individual mandate which gets more attention. The employer mandate, which takes effect in 2014, will apply to all firms with 50 or more employees. If an employer fails to provide ?qualifying health insurance? (which is defined by Obama-appointed bureaucrats at the Department of Health and Human Services), these employers will have to pay a per-employee excise tax fine. The tax is $2,000 per employee ($3,000 if an employee receives coverage through an exchange). If the employer has a waiting period to get into the plan, there is an additional tax of $400-$600.

A small employer with 100 employees could easily find himself paying a tax of $300,000 per year. Even if an employer provides health insurance, it can be deemed ?unqualified? by HHS. Just ask the Catholic bishops.

Kill Shot

When the bounties get toted up, then, it?s likely to be Sean Payton who loses the most. The head coach, universally thought of as a play-calling genius, has gotten much of the credit for the team?s turnaround over the last five years. If the Saints keep on winning without him on the sidelines, he?ll suffer yet another blow to his reputation. In the end, Payton will have been exposed as arrogant, irrational, and?worst of all?inessential.

Call for unity as Tunisia marks Independence Day

Thousands of Tunisians gathered Tuesday in defence of liberty as they marked Independence Day amid fears of a widening divide between secular and religious groups in the newly democratised nation.

Waving the Tunisian flag and singing the national anthem, the group chanted: "Liberty, dignity" as they gathered on Tunis' main Avenue Bourguiba.

Elsewhere in the capital, President Moncef Marzouki said the national day celebrations presented "an opportunity for us all to rethink our relationships, to live with our differences, and despite our differences".

"National unity cannot last if it is built on misunderstanding, hatred and division," he told a flag-raising ceremony at the presidential palace in Carthage.

Tunisia is grappling with its new identity after a revolution that led to the ouster in January last year of longtime authoritarian president Zine el Abidine Ben Ali and triggered the Arab Spring uprisings.

The country is now governed by moderate Islamist leaders, but they are under pressure from a radical Muslim fringe known as Salafists to increase the role of Islam in the country's politics.

A long-running dispute over a university's decision to ban women from wearing the full-face veil, or niqab, has proven especially significant.

Salafists have spent months demonstrating at Manouba University, about 25 kilometres (15 miles) from Tunis, and on March 7, a Salafist activist tried to replace the national flag flying over the roof of the arts and humanities faculty building, with the black flag of Islam.

Subsequent secular attacks saw eggs thrown at the walls of mosques at Ben Guerdane, near the border with Libya. Inside the mosques, copies of the Koran were found torn up.

In Tunis, vandals drew the Star of David, a Jewish symbol, on the walls of the El Fath mosque.

"We've seen this month criminal attempts to attack our union and sow sedition and hatred among our citizens," Marzouki said.

"On behalf of the Tunisian state, I apologise to any Tunisian who has been subjected to injustice for his beliefs since independence," the president added.

Last week, Islamist sympathisers marched on parliament to demand the inclusion of Sharia law in the new constitution being drafted by a special, elected assembly.

But Tuesday's protesters waved banners insisting: "Leave my Tunisia free", and "Separation of religion and state".

"I have fought against dictatorship and I came here to make it clear that we will never accept to be under another dictatorship," demonstrator Oum Zyed said.

"There are attacks against our liberty, and we are here today against the introduction of the Sharia, the Islamic law, in our future constitution and to insist on a democratic constitution that respects the liberties and rights of all Tunisians," added Mongi Ellouz, an official in the Progressive Democratic Party.

Tunisia on Tuesday celebrated 56 years since winning independence from France.

Marzouki pardoned about 2,400 prisoners to mark the occasion, reducing the sentences of prisoners older than 65, younger than 20 or those with serious illnesses or handicaps.

Oprah is finding that it's hard being on your OWN

AFP - Getty Images

Oprah Winfey's network debuted with much fanfare, but this week announced layoffs and a reorganization.

By Eve Tahmincioglu

Oprah Winfrey may want to consider giving away a few more free cars to help her struggling cable network.

The car giveaway episode aired in 2004, when she was at the height of her TV career hosting ?The Oprah Winfrey Show,? seemed to be what everyone was talking about back then.?Even Oprah said the event was??one of my all-time favorite happiest moments ever? as she put it recently on?the Oprah Winfrey Network, or OWN.

Alas, it's unhappy times for Winfrey's OWN right now. In recent days the network announced it was pulling the plug on ?The Rosie Show? and embarking on a major restructuring, including laying off 30 employees of its 150-person staff.

?It is difficult to make tough business decisions that affect people?s lives,? said Winfrey, CEO and chief creative officer of the network, in a statement, ?but the economics of a start-up cable network just don?t work with the cost structure that was in place.?

It?s a difficult and surprising setback for the former queen of daytime talk shows who for so long seemed to have the Midas touch whether it came to TV ratings or endorsing products. ?

She left all that behind and embarked on creating her own network, launching it on Jan. 1, 2011. OWN is a joint venture between her Harpo Inc. and Discovery Communications, and replaced the Discovery Health Channel.

OWN is struggling for a number of reasons, said Jeffrey McCall, professor of media studies at DePauw University. "Oprah is not present in most of the programming," he noted. "Oprah's followers like her --?not necessarily her stand-ins and friends."

"Ultimately it is quite different delivering a magic touch to a one-hour daily gabfest and trying to spring that same magic on a round-the-clock channel in which the only distinguishing characteristic is that Oprah runs it," he said. "Oprah's fans just aren't going to watch a channel because Oprah was the business entrepreneur behind it."

OWN executives realize more Winfrey screen time and connections with her fans are critical to the future success of the network. Her "Next Chapter" show on Sunday nights is a big viewership driver, and on Monday the network is bringing back her "Lifeclass" series, in which she?talks about life lessons on everything from joy to the false power of ego.

OWN President Erik Larson acknowledged that Oprah?s appearances are ?a halo effect for what?s happening for the rest or our network.? But, he told msnbc.com,??in order to have a network you don?t need her to be in every single show.?

While OWN's restructuring, announced Monday, has many wondering whether?the network's days are numbered, Larson said?the changes represent the second phase of a process to build a stronger OWN.?The first step was focusing on improving ratings, which are now growing by more than 10 percent?monthly, driven in large part by Winfrey interviews with celebrities such as Lady Gaga, he said. ?And now management is turning to the financials, he said, by ?right-sizing our business.??

With some of the changes, it appears Discovery will take a more hands-on approach.

Veteran Discovery executive Neal Kirsch will be taking over as chief operating officer and chief financial officer of OWN.?Lee Bartlett, executive vice president for?global production management, business and legal affairs at Discovery will now help oversee a similar department at OWN.?Ian Parmiter, senior vice president of marketing at Discovery ad sales, will take over marketing for OWN.

?As CEO, I have a responsibility to chart the course for long-term success for the network,? Winfrey said. ?To wholly achieve that long-term success, this was a necessary next step.?

Another necessary step was canceling Rosie O?Donnell?s show, which was plagued by low ratings. According to TVGuide.com, the show?s debut ratings averaged 497,000 viewers in October, but that had dropped to?204,000 by last month. O?Donnell taped her final show Tuesday.

Winfrey thanked O?Donnell in a statement about the axing, but added, ?As I have learned in the last 15 months, a new network launch is always a challenge, and ratings grow over time as you continue to gather an audience.?

Related: Rosie O?Donnell admits show cancellation ?was fair?

A Wall Street Journal article Tuesday said Discovery had put $312 million into OWN?s operations as of the end of last year, up $254 million from Sept. 30. According to a Forbes article from last year, Discovery had initially agreed to pump $200 million into the network.

The transition from daytime TV host to cable has been rough for Winfrey?s brand.

?While headlining her own syndicated ?The Oprah Winfrey Show,? Oprah was unstoppable,? said Don Seaman, marketing manager for TVB, a trade?association for the?commercial broadcast?industry. ?But since last January she?s on cable, on her OWN. The Oprah Winfrey Network, that is. And she?s hardly been heard from since.?

Arctic climate 'tech fixes' urged

An eminent UK engineer is suggesting building cloud-whitening towers in the Faroe Islands as a "technical fix" for warming across the Arctic.

Scientists told UK MPs this week that the possibility of a major methane release triggered by melting Arctic ice constitutes a "planetary emergency".

The Arctic could be sea-ice free each September within a few years.

Wave energy pioneer Stephen Salter has shown that pumping seawater sprays into the atmosphere could cool the planet.

The Edinburgh University academic has previously suggested whitening clouds using specially-built ships.

At a meeting in Westminster organised by the Arctic Methane Emergency Group (Ameg), Prof Salter told MPs that the situation in the Arctic was so serious that ships might take too long.

"I don't think there's time to do ships for the Arctic now," he said.

"We'd need a bit of land, in clean air and the right distance north... where you can cool water flowing into the Arctic."

Everybody working in geo-engineering hopes it won't be needed - but we fear it will be?

End Quote Stephen Salter Edinburgh University

Favoured locations would be the Faroes and islands in the Bering Strait, he said.

Towers would be constructed, simplified versions of what has been planned for ships.

In summer, seawater would be pumped up to the top using some kind of renewable energy, and out through the nozzles that are now being developed at Edinburgh University, which achieve incredibly fine droplet size.

In an idea first proposed by US physicist John Latham, the fine droplets of seawater provide nuclei around which water vapour can condense.

This makes the average droplet size in the clouds smaller, meaning they appear whiter and reflect more of the Sun's incoming energy back into space, cooling the Earth.

On melting ice

The area of Arctic Ocean covered by ice each summer has declined significantly over the last few decades as air and sea temperatures have risen.

For each of the last four years, the September minimum has seen about two-thirds of the average cover for the years 1979-2000, which is used a baseline. The extent covered at other times of the year has also been shrinking.

What more concerns some scientists is the falling volume of ice.

Peter Wadhams, professor of ocean physics at Cambridge University, presented an analysis drawing on data and modelling from the PIOMAS ice volume project at the University of Washington in Seattle.

It suggests, he said, that Septembers could be ice-free within just a few years.

"In 2007, the water [off northern Siberia] warmed up to about 5C (41F) in summer, and this extends down to the sea bed, melting the offshore permafrost."

Among the issues this raises is whether the ice-free conditions will quicken release of methane currently trapped in the sea bed, especially in the shallow waters along the northern coast of Siberia, Canada and Alaska.

Methane is a much more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, though it does not last as long in the atmosphere.

Several teams of scientists trying to measure how much methane is actually being released have reported seeing vast bubbles coming up through the water - although analysing how much this matters is complicated by the absence of similar measurements from previous decades.

Nevertheless, Prof Wadhams told MPs, the release could be expected to get stronger over time.

"With 'business-as-usual' greenhouse gas emissions, we might have warming of 9-10C in the Arctic.

"That will cement in place the ice-free nature of the Arctic Ocean - it will release methane from offshore, and a lot of the methane on land as well."

This would - in turn - exacerbate warming, across the Arctic and the rest of the world.

Abrupt methane releases from frozen regions may have played a major role in two events, 55 and 251 million years ago, that extinguished much of the life then on Earth.

Meteorologist Lord (Julian) Hunt, who chaired the meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Climate Change, clarified that an abrupt methane release from the current warming was not inevitable, describing that as "an issue for scientific debate".

But he also said that some in the scientific community had been reluctant to discuss the possibility.

"There is quite a lot of suppression and non-discussion of issues that are difficult, and one of those is in fact methane," he said, recalling a reluctance on the part of at least one senior scientists involved in the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment to discuss the impact that a methane release might have.

Reluctant solutions

The field of implementing technical climate fixes, or geo-engineering, is full of controversy, and even those involved in researching the issue see it as a last-ditch option, a lot less desirable than constraining greenhouse gas emissions.

Adaptation

Action that helps cope with the effects of climate change - for example construction of barriers to protect against rising sea levels, or conversion to crops capable of surviving high temperatures and drought.

"Everybody working in geo-engineering hopes it won't be needed - but we fear it will be," said Prof Salter.

Adding to the controversy is that some of the techniques proposed could do more harm than good.

The idea of putting dust particles into the stratosphere to reflect sunlight, mimicking the cooling effect of volcanic eruptions, would in fact be disastrous for the Arctic, said Prof Salter, with models showing it would increase temperatures at the pole by perhaps 10C.

And last year, the cloud-whitening idea was also criticised by scientists who calculated that using the wrong droplet size could lead to warming - though Prof Salter says this can be eliminated through experimentation.

He has not so far embarked on a full costing of the land-based towers, but suggests ?200,000 as a ballpark figure.

Depending on the size and location, Prof Salter said that in the order of 100 towers would be needed to counteract Arctic warming.

However, no funding is currently on the table for cloud-whitening. A proposal to build a prototype ship for about ?20m found no takers, and currently development work is limited to the lab.

Keep Your Pets Happy Without a Yard Renters Solutions ...

03-13-12_petsnoyard1.jpg

Whether you're a renter or city dweller, living with a yard can come at a premium. The absence of a yard can also seemingly make life for your pet unpleasant, but after six years I can attest that not only can living without a yard be fine, but even fun!

For the past six years my husband and I have lived in Chicago ? a city notorious for its lack of yard space. But for each of those years, we've lived with a cat, and most recently added a dog to our family. We keep our cat indoors, so save for a few attempted escapes, it hasn't been an issue for him. Here are some tips we'd reccommend for other pet owners without a yard:

Consider The Level You'll Live On: We currently live on the first floor of our building, and have direct access to the outdoors. This makes potty trips quick, easy and hassle-free. If we lived on an upper floor, I'm sure going outside would be more time consuming and a nuisance. I can't personally vouch for these, but many high-rise dweller swear by training pads and patches of grass such as PetAPotty to get the job done.

Choose Your Breed With Care: Whether your pet is purebred or mutt, it's important to choose a dog who is well-suited for apartment living and confined spaces. Some dogs, particually large ones, need to have a large space to expend their energy and get sufficient exercise. We specifically chose our dog because he is small, well-suited for apartments, and doesn't need a huge amount of exercise. If you insist on getting a large pet, just be prepared to give them tons of playtime and exercise, which brings me to my next point...

Give Them Plenty of Exercise: This is where the fun part comes in. Too many people probably rely to heavily on their yard for their pet's exercize. But, having a pet is a great excuse to get outside, explore your surroundings, and meet your neighbors and other dog owners. A good rule of thumb would be at least 2-3 walks a day, and the length of time really depends on your pet's energy level and needs. Also be sure to have a good variety of toys and treats to keep your pets stimulated while at home. If your dog is being crazy, it probably means they're not getting enough walks and playtime (and your neighbors probably aren't too happy either).

Frequent The Dog Park: We walk outside so much more, and LOVE our neighborhood dog parks. We're lucky to have three parks within a half-mile. Dog parks are a great way to let your dog go loose (responsibly) and socialize them with other dogs. We try to go as often as possible (several times a week), and it's not only fun for my husband and I, but our dog also has a blast. Just be very attentive to your dog and others' to prevent any problems and stay safe. Many park systems also require that a dog be registered and have a special dog park tag, so check with their rules and regulations.

Invest in a Dog Walker or Doggie Daycare: If you work full time away from home, hire a dog walker, take them to doggie daycare, or drop them off at a pet sitter. No pet wants to, or should, be left alone for extended periods of time ? whether indoors or out ? for their mental and physical wellbeing. For us, hiring a dog walker was crucial, particularly when we were house training our dog. We were able to have the walker come for several short walks a day, and now we've reduced it to a longer single walk. Doggie daycare and and pet sitters are great options if you don't want your dog unattended, and if you want to keep them active throughout the day.

Bring the Outside In: If your pet is particularly fond of plants, give them their very own to play with. Cats are notorious for eating plants, but some can be toxic. Check out this list of non-toxic plants, and definitely become familiar with this list of common house plants that are toxic to pets.

New Romney ad says Santorum weak on the economy

Republican presidential candidate, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum speaks during a rally, Friday, March 16, 2012, in Osage Beach, Mo. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel)

(AP) ? TITLE: "Wrong Choice."

LENGTH: 30 seconds.

AIRING: Cable and broadcast stations in Illinois.

KEY IMAGES: This ad by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney takes sharp aim at chief rival Rick Santorum's economic plan, claiming the former Pennsylvania senator is an "economic lightweight" on par with President Barack Obama.

With soft music in the background, a narrator asks: "Who can turn around the economy and defeat Barack Obama?" and quickly adds: "Not Rick Santorum."

"Santorum's real weakness is the economy," the narrator says as the screen shows jumpy footage of Santorum talking with a background image of an abandoned factory.

"He's never run a business or a state. His plan: 'economic illiteracy,' 'inexcusable,' 'the worst idea of any GOP candidate.'" There's a shot of a toddler in a crib as the narrator calls Santorum's plan "economic illiteracy."

"Rick Santorum: Another economic lightweight," the narrator says as the screen shows side-by-side shots of Obama and Santorum. "Mitt Romney: Ready to 'lead the nation to a new era'" and "with 'the boldest GOP agenda since Reagan.'"

The ad closes with a beaming Romney meeting with workers and greeting an enthusiastic crowd from a stage.

ANALYSIS: In the final days before the hotly contested Illinois primary, Romney is trying to drive home his point that he is better equipped to lead the nation's economic recovery, the thematic foundation of his candidacy. Romney wants to regain a jolt of momentum in the large industrial state while stopping the surging Santorum, who has been buoyed by a pair of victories over Romney in the Deep South states of Alabama and Mississippi.

As in several past contests, Romney and his allies are spending heavily on attack ads to gain an edge.

Romney bases his latest claims almost exclusively on commentary in various media that are included in small text that can be difficult to read as it scrolls across the screen. A line that Santorum's "real weakness is the economy" comes from a headline on the financial website MarketWatch.

The line about Romney being "ready to lead the nation to a new era" is from the Cincinnati Enquirer's endorsement of him. The closer about Romney having the "boldest GOP agenda" since President Ronald Reagan was pulled from an opinion piece by a blogger for the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank.

Romney, as a former governor of Massachusetts with a long record as a venture capitalist, is trying to play up his economic background by noting that Santorum, who spent much of his career in Congress and as a media commentator, has never run a business or a state.

Romney has played up his business background as proof that he has the know-how to turn around the nation's ailing economy, and the ad tries to build on that assertion. Santorum often highlights his socially conservative views.

The former governor favors lower taxes, less regulation, a balanced federal budget and more trade deals to spur growth. He would replace jobless benefits with unemployment savings accounts. Santorum wants to spur job creation by eliminating corporate taxes for manufacturers, drilling for more oil and gas, and slashing regulations.

Romney and other rivals for the Republican presidential nomination have accused Santorum of turning his back on fiscal conservatism when he was a senator from Pennsylvania by supporting big-government spending programs. Santorum has countered by saying he is the true conservative in the GOP pack.

Sandra Bullock and Brett Ratner: NOT Dating

Are Sandra Bullock and director/notorious playboy Brett Ratner engaged in a "dangerous" romance? One tabloid would certainly have you believe it, but no.

This week, In Touch ran a cover with a laughing Bullock and Ratner Photoshopped atop her, with the headline reading, "SANDRA'S RISKY NEW ROMANCE."

The caption: "Two years after her divorce, she's opened her heart and learned to trust again. But will dating Hollywood's biggest player end in heartbreak?"

Turns out the only thing Bullock is doing with Ratner is issuing statements.

Risky New Fake Romance!

Bullock and Ratner issued the following statement to The Huffington Post, deriding the magazine while firmly denying any claims of a romantic connection:

"We think that it's incredibly sad that in these times, this magazine would resort to a complete fabrication, solely for financial gain," the twosome said.

"There is not a shred of accuracy in their story ... We have not seen nor spoken to each for over a decade. We both had a great time after the Oscars."

"Just not with each other."
